We use 0.6mg/kg SID. We had an exotics vet in recently who was using a much lower dose of 0.25-0.5mg/kg BID. When I asked him why, he said that he can always raise the dose if necc and due to their metabolism is better to be given twice daily, although I've not encountered this before.

We also use 0.6mg/kg. We have an Exotic Cert holder vet.

Hi, thanks both. Yes the general consensus seems to be that a dose of 0.3-0.6mg/kg is used - (I've had recommendations for 0.3-0.6 from one rabbit specialist and 0.6mg/kg from another) and up to 1.5mg/kg BID for short-term use.

We use 0.6mg/kg dose; I don't feel that anything less than 0.5mg/kg does anything in the way of pain relief (The half life of metacam is roughly about 8 hours so a low dose is really not going to last very long). I have used 1mg/kg on some occasions but wouldn't feel comfortable going up to 1.5mg/kg - I think if you need to go that high you need to thinking of using vetergesic as an additional pain killer.

I've always used 0.5mg/kg for the 5mg/ml metacam as its the same as the metoclopramide dose- makes the sums a bit easier :)

Remember we are now in an era of EBVM, and VNs should be a part of that - so please do pass on your current protocols! :)

Current thinking seems to be that 0.2mg/kg (meloxicam) is too low a dose, so if you are using this currently, you may want to watch this post - we all know that post-op pain in rabbits can be catastrophic for recovery..

0.3-0.6mk/kg s.c, po q24h some rabbits may require of0.3mg/kg to achieve optimal plasma levels over 24hours. doses of 1.5mg/kg S.C are well tolerated for 5 days....
