Weigh the bottles or do a reconciliation at the opening of each new bottle- ie. 10ml should be recorded as used or wasted at the opening of a new bottle (like a petty cash book).

Although you never get the figures to add up. Ever.

The practice I'm currently locuming at weigh the bottles daily. as 1ml of liquid = 1gram it's fairly accurate i think. Your just need to weigh a full or empty bottle and calculate the difference. Not sure if this is of any use to anyone.

Visual check and proper reconcile at end of bottle ( use a lot of methadone) . If spillages or wastage would be double signed by vet and rvn.

visual check every time its used and actual check where it is drawn out at the end of the 28 day broach

Ours is never spot on using the 0.05 wastage but not far out. We use the dechra controlled drugs books for our methadone and they supply us with them free.

We used to do the same as VickyVN - in the drug book we would just write the amount used "+ 0.05ml wastage" at the end. Ours would never add up, we were never missing huge amounts but I did wonder if the wastage was slightly more than they suggested?

We only checked ours visually.

if your drawing in and out of the bottle on a daily occurrence, certainly your contaminating the product . as you will be drawing air into the syringe to accurately measure the volume each time..

when you give a dose of said product. do you actually draw back an extra amount to accompany for the 0.05ml that will be left in the needle. As syringes and needles are calibrated to allow for wastage and measurements..

correct me if I’m wrong. Practices I worked at, just logged when a new bottle is breached in your register. the amount administered to the patient, patient information. Administration nurse/vet and prescriber check.. The RCVS will allow a reading of 9.8 mils recorded out of a 10 ml vial. (Wastage) etc.

Daily? - do you have concerns of a user in the practice? We do weekly or twice weekly dependent on use and dont withdraw from the bottle to do it - but daily seems a bit excessive unless you are using a lot of it.

Yes i agree, thats why i am looking for a better method, do you add 0.05 to what you write down as dose given to the animal e.g maggie 0.15 when actually she was given 0.1 and 0.05 was methadone? or do you log actual dose given and then say '+ 0.05 waste' ?

We don't draw out of the bottle to check amounts. We use multi dose methadone and do get through it quite quickly so we just reconcile that it matches when we come to the end of the bottle, and just a daily visual check to ensure bottle doesn't look vastly different to what we should have. We record all doses given and add on 0.05mls as wastage for each dose. I would think repeatedly drawing from the bottle increases risk of breaking sterility and the number of punstures in the rubber unnecessarily.

You're allowed to mark a certain amount as 'wastage', i believe.
