Yeah, I'm sure it's exciting but a bit scary too - haha

I'm currently doing an online diploma in Animal Care - hoping for a complete career change so doing this alongside my current job - hoping this shows commitment!

In Inverness Heather, I think its called Green House or something? Its at Inshes, across the road from the travel Inn, they were really fantastic, and even phoned around colleges to see what courses I could do x

Aye, cant wait Kelly I do feel a bit of a spare part just now, due to lack of knowledge really, also I am applying for an open learning course on veterinary terminology as I feel it will be invaluable to me. You could do that and include it on your cv, that would show you are really trying hard? I am doing it through Telford college and its £175, but worth it I think x

I went to Scot careers to get help with my cv and cover letter, they were fantastic and know all the tricks of the trade Itworked though, I sent 6 to local practices and got 6 replies, I now start college in August, block release, and then full time at tp, I am also in tp voluntary just now until I start full time. The practice I decided on said they were very impressed with my cv so it really is worth while getting one done by the pros.

I guess practices are getting alot of CVs through the post then?

I've made sure my CV and covering letter are practically word perfect and made a real effort with mine - I can understand why anyone receiving lots can get frustrated with people who don't.

I prefer getting a CV by email, as I have to spend a lot of time in front of my computer. If it is really interesting, I would request a paper one with a recent photo.

This might come as sounding idiotic, but please included a cover letter if sending by post. I have received 7 CV's this week so far with no covering letter or anything!

Hi

I can sympathise, I'm going through this process at the moment. I've sent out about 25 or so CVs over a 3 week period. I've had 3 responses so far, 2 by letter saying sorry - no vacancies, 1 by email basically saying the same. I'm taking all the advice I can get at the moment, researching everything I can, worked really hard on a well constructed letter and CV etc.. I just hope something comes up soon :)

Arrrghhhh I hate bad spelling!! Its the one thing that will make me put a CV in the bin straight away, especially if they can't spell "vetinnary" and that happens a lot. I also don't look at letters which start "I really love animals" - really??? Why would anyone who works with animals love them??? They scratch & bite you - personally I hate all animals!!

Did like the the idea of putting a brightly coloured letter on top of your CV, to make it stand out.

(I'm being sarcastic here in case anyone picks me up wrongly!)

Also as a note, if anyone is going to email a CV or request to a practice, make sure it is still done in a formal letter style. We have had a few recently with terrible spelling, grammar errors and written in a really informal style and our practice partners won't even give them a second look.

Albatross - I appreciate your frustration with this, just a little word of advice - and I am not being patronising. Be a bit careful about 'pointedly asking a practice where your cv is lacking', I know you are getting fed up, I hear that but dont risk putting their backs up . By all means call them but maybe instead ask them what sort of things you could do to make you more employable? (to them leastways) that to me would show a willingness, whereas to me a pointed question would show ... attitude. Hope something comes up for you soon

I agree that many of the adverts dont really ask for what they want and many could be a lot clearer about what they DO want rather than wasting peoples time.

You must be doing something right tho - at least you are getting replies which is a lot more than some people get

well, another week or so down the line and the total number of replies is 6 out of 33.....

One resulted in a phone conversation as there was an advert for a first year SVN - however that advert was ambiguous as what they actually wanted was an already enrolled, already well into portfolio and college work first year, not someone who wanted to start ou the ladder (even though it only advertised a prerequisite of having nursing experience but not the actual almost complete NVQ2 they really wanted). Shame, I got my hopes up for an interview for that one.. it seems that even the rare adverts for first year aren't even the first step up..

well after a week, I've had FOUR replies, two by email, two by post. All saying there's no jobs at the moment but they'll keep me on file.

One of the places I emailed was one I'd spoken to on the phone twice since last September, and they'd sounded interested, but when I sent the CV they never replied. They now have advertised on here, and still no reply. Think I might ring them and pointedly ask where my CV is lacking! Amazing because I get interviews outside of Kent but not inside...

I'm in the process of doing this at the moment, what I'm doing is using my free minutes on my payg phone and calling first. Then some want me to post or email my c.v. Some people were rude and abrupt, but most said, ''Were not recruiting but sent you c.v anyway'''

It's just something you have to do unfortunately isn't it? Wouldn't it be great fi there was a job center type website just for vets? We could go to one place instead of calling, emailing, posting, looking at all the animal charities, scrwaling through here, caw, vetsnow etc etc lol.

I'll probably sound really old fashioned but I prefer receiving postal CVs/applications. One some occasions the person sending the email isn't completely email-savvy and it takes several goes to send an attachment of their CV. It would have been quicker to use the post! I always reply to applicants though, even if it takes a little while as it only takes a couple of minutes to draft a letter.

We dont get too many job applications. But I will always reply to them or speak to them on the phone if I can. One word of warning. as I am head nurse in a small practice I do not have access to the work email, so anything sent to me there, my boss is inclined to delete.

i posted all mine, expensive as it were as i also didnt think an email would be noticed as much, plus my CV was pink so easy to find in a pile of paper, and got alot of good comments from some places for the new idea, but all my interviews were months down the line from sending CV's earlier in the year so some do reply

We get alot of job enquiry letters and I reply to all of them..... it may not be for a while, as I tend to do them when I get a chance, which isn't very often, but I make sure everyone gets some sort of reply..... I've worked in too many practices where letters are just ignored or there isn't enough time to reply etc but I think that if someone can be bothered to write in then someone should be bothered to reply!

When I was looking for an SVN position, I sent SAE in all my letters and VERY few bothered to reply, Which I personally found rude?

I'm a head nurse now and would personally prefer an e-mail CV as I'm always on my work e-mail doing bits and bobs. However I do know a lot of people aren't E-mail savvy so it might be worth sending all the practices an e-mail and paper CV?

I dunno, its just an idea? Like I say though, it really depends on the person as a lot of practices I know and/or have worked at have e-mail but don't check regularly.

I know its a bit more costly sending postal CV's out but you might find it might generate a bit more interest?
