Oh well, use advice for future reference!!

RE: Cruciate repair op

oh yeah, we don't bandage ours unless there has been significant blood loss (TPLOs standard protocol where I work)

RE: Cruciate repair op

As already mentioned numerous times pain relief is prob your main nursing consideration (assuming the dog is otherwise healthy) so a good opioid in your premed, we use methadone, its anaesthetic sparing too so you won't need to have them on quite so much volatile (hopefully!)

Dressing such as primapore for first 24 hours until fibrin seal formed, change if strike though but leave if not, don't be tempted to change at morning checks of it doesn't need it!

We cold compress ours straight away every 4 hours for 10-15 mins

Sling walk but do allow dog to put foot to floor if they wish, another advantage of good pain relief is that they are more likely to do this, don't get me wrong, they need to rest but toe/ foot touching floor is a good thing

Don't forget about the importance of nutrition, protein will help with the healing process, again, a pain free animal more likely to eat. maybe find out what the dog normally eats

Lots of Cuddles and TLC!!

RE: Cruciate repair op

Hey Colin

For TPLO's and extra capsular repairs, we do methadone q4 overnight then switch to buprenorphine in the morning. metacam on exiting theatre then oral from the following day. cold compresses and wound checks Q4. We continue our intra op antibiotics once more post surgery and further antibiotics if required. Cage rest only. We keep them on Maintenance fluids until eating and drinking. TTAs are given modified robert jones bandages on top of this overnight post surgery with standard bandage checks. We will do one lot of light physio with them the following morning and recommend the owners continue this, usually sending them home the afternoon after surgery.

Hope this helps

RE: Cruciate repair op

How long post op would you wait before applying cold compress? and does anyone apply a bandage post op for first few hours?

Re: Cruciate repair op

You doing a TTA by any chance?? Premed with a good opiate such as morphine. However I prefer the use of methadone. Less side effects compared to morphine. Buprenorphine Isn't effective enough for this type of surgery. NSAIDs too at premed. Poss. Nerve block. We used to epidural our TPLOs. We routinely gave IV antibiotics at time of prep. Maybe the use of nitrous oxide UGA. Fluid therapy UGA. Ice pack wound post op. Continue methadone/morphine every 4 hours.

Re: Cruciate repair op

Plenty Pre an post Op pain relief. what procedure are you using??
