The only non-scrub iodine solution available is Videne (Animal Care/Ecolab) and is available through most wholesalers.

When flushing the orbit and sweeping the fornices use a 1:50 solution with Saline a contact time of 3 minutes is recommended.

For cleaning around the eye a 1:10 solution made with saline is advisable with great care taken not to contact the eye or sensitive mucous membranes.

If there is any query at all over a penetrating injury to the eye - use warm Hartmanns to flush the fornices.

If there is a deep ulceration you can still use the 1:50 solution, but just take greater care when sweeping the fornices.

I know this is an old thread but its a question (so not sure if anyone will see but) I was going to ask this question as the practice I am working only has the scrub solution which contain soap. Unfortunately I have not been able to get hold of a 7.5% iodine solution but have a 10% instead. The quantities would definitely be different but would the ratios still apply do you think? 1:50 and 1:10

Ragina what brand of iodine do you buy/use? I thought the 7.5% made by Anistel had surfactants added which would only make it suitable for surgical scrubbing of hands

For eye surgery such as cateract we have 3 100ml bags of saline in one its left as plain saline for rinsing and flushing, another has 2mls iodine added so its 1:50which is used for the eye and the third bag has 10mls idoine in so is 1:10 which is used for around the lid of the eye
