He was on metacam when he traumatised the front foot. No scrapes done as skin looks 100% normal bar the traumatised toes. Maybe scrapes next step? He has had monthly advocate anyway. Am really thinking not behavioural though obviously cant rule it out as he seems such a content happy puppy. Just seems so extreme to gnaw at yourself enough to lose a toe!! Never seen anything so extreme.

Re: puppy self trauma

have they done skin scrapes/bloods or anything like that?

Re: puppy self trauma

Where is your cousin based?

Re: puppy self trauma
My cousins 4 month old collie puppy is being treated by our vets and we are baffled. It started about 3 weeks ago licking id spaces on one hind paw. Very quickly this led to major self trauma of both hind feet. As a result one toe will be lost as he has actually pulled the bone in the end of the toe off and has almost chewed whole end of the toe off. Other foot was damaged but we seem to have salvaged it and now granulating well. Tissue cultures were done which didnt show any unexpected bacteria. Now just today he has done the same to a front paw - he was only in 2 days ago and that paw looked 100% normal then. Skin itself looks normal - where not chewed - and nothing to see anywhere else. He is doing this while owners are in as i know they can mutilate with separation issues, and he is a laid back happy puppy. He isnt insured so although they will spend what they can no endless pot of money. Any ideas anyone?
Referral to veterinary behaviourist affilitated to the APBC? I am assuming no evidence of any spinal pain anywhere? Have chronic pain medications (NSAIDs/etc) been tried? Did this have any effect? Could it be similiar in aetiology to feline orofacial pain syndrome in Burmese cats? Drugs like phenobarbitone have been tried with some success for that condition. Any neurologists to refer to?
