Works perfectly. Only problem is that it's tinyyyyyyyy, so only suitable for buns/cats/small dogs. Other slight problem was the probe, being so small, falls out of my probe covers so will have to tape the covers on.

But, the readings were constant and compared to the readings from another 2 non-indwelling thermometers the results were comparable. I'm looking forward to using it on my rabbit op tomorrow!

Re: Digital Rectal Thermometers (indwelling)

Hi, so sorry emama10, I missed your earlier post... I would imagine they are watertight - we don't yet have one, I'm still waiting on my boss ordering it! But, I imagine they would be, it will be good to get your feedback when yours arrives Steph Smith.

Was using a Welch-Allen with a coiled extension for monitoring dogs whose bums were covered by drapes which gave a constant reading (got it 2nd hand off eBay) and it was great. Until it stopped working (tried changing the batteries). Only prob was as it was made for humans it was too big for small dogs/cats/buns.

Re: Digital Rectal Thermometers (indwelling)

I know JAK do an indwelling thermometer problem is the new one likes to turn its self off after 10 min so you cant get a constant read after 10 min of time.

Re: Digital Rectal Thermometers (indwelling)

Hi joesmum,

They have a suitable sized probe and their temp range is 32-42C (89-107F), so perfect for our patients. You can get them from loads of poultry sites online and they're only about £15!

Hope this helps.

Hi I am looking for something like this :

http://www.vet-tech.co.uk/laboratory-supplies/instruments/therm-hygrometers/digital-rectal-thermometer.aspx

for use with exotics and small mammals during anaesthesia. Really struggling to find anything except this - I doubt my boss will want to spend too much and want to find something as cheap as possible - any ideas people?? Will be really appreciated!! :) :) xxxxx

[/quote]

There's a saying in the vet profession about 'not xraying the client's pocket' - you might be surprised what he springs for, if this is the tool needed to get the job done. Point out the benefits of faster, safer, and better recovery as well as safer anaesthesia and you may find that the probe pays for itself! (in fact, if he's looking to upgrade his anaesthesia monitoring kit, often a probe is built in!)

Re: Digital Rectal Thermometers (indwelling)

May be a long shot and l know sound crazy but have you looked at cooking thermometers they often have a setup like you want with probe and may well do the job. Often stick a certain label on and quadriple the price or more yet same thing badged as something else can be peanuts..
