We had our first case in this week - and after 50 maggots I gave up counting. But then again I guess we've all heard the cat and dog horror stories too. Makes me really sad to think there are animals out there suffering But if we all do our bit then at least we are helping some f them, hey!

Re: Flystrike

I made one with a nasty pic i found of a bunny online with pretty much no back end...if it will make a difference or not i don't know. I feel so sorry for bunnies, they are far to frequently a very neglected pet shoved in a hutch given some food once a day and cleaned once a week.

Had a guy come into a nurse clinic yesterday with a rabbit he'd acquired from a friend that day. I clipped about 3-4cm off each nail. Turned it over and hanging off the tail was a MASSIVE solid (so much so you could tap it with your nail and it made a noise ) ball of bedding, fur and faecal matter! Took it out the back and with assistance of a vet clipped the mass off and gave it's bum. Such a well behaved bunny luckily cos it took a while! It had gunky eyes so is going to need treatment for that. The man wasn't english and didn't speak much english so did my best to explain things to him. His son was with him who i presume goes to an english school and is better able to understand me. I gave them an information pack on bunnies and adv they book an appt asap to see a vet. They seem like nice people who care for the bunny so it's lucky to be with them now.

Re: Flystrike

i think that sounds really good Natalie and think i might try to implement this into our practice. - kathy

Re: Flystrike

I used to run rabbit clinics in the summer months free of charge, to do bottom checks aswell as a general check over of the rabbits condition. Picked up loads of potential fly strikes before that had chance to happen. Which of course is a bonus for us not having to deal with maggots aswell as for poor old bunny having to suffer with them. What we did was to pull up all client details with clients owning rabbits and send them all a 'free rabbit check' letter. You can of course then either sell some rearguard, or other bits and pieces, or you could offer to apply the rearguard, which is what I used to do. I just think that bunnies on the whole get a really rough deal, so many people don't know how to look after them properly, what diet to feed etc. The more bunnies we can get in through the door, and the more awareness raised the better I say!

Re: Flystrike

I liked the R.W.A and Rearguard posters.

Re: Flystrike

When i was working in my old practice I was in charge of notice boards, I done one for flystrike, I contacted the company who does rearguard and rabbit welfare charities and printed pictures of the internet of rabbits, cats , dogs etc.... with it.

Re: Flystrike

You could make your own....I did a few years back..
