I don't know why? 2 out of 3 had their pre med sc instead of im which we don't usually do...if that makes any difference? I haven't had this issue before!

Re: Not sure what I'm doing wrong?

James Colver Cert. Firstly, I wouldn't worry you are doing anything terribly wrong. It's right sc is less then ideal for burprenorphine (pre meds in general in my opinion) as the uptake especially in cats, is very slow and may never reach required plasma levels. Therefore, although acp and all opioids can cause hypersalivation, I doubt the side effects you saw were from the bup directly, ? possibly from the lack of it.

Causes of hypersalivation are commonly nausea, in which case a dose of maropitant sorts it, or pain. It's unusual I admit that you have seen it 3 times all of a sudden, especially if following the same protocol and same sort of surgery etc as usual.

Another suggestion is whether there was any residue left on ET tubes? Often this causes coughing, but it's possible it caused hypersalivation/nausea in these cases.

Have you seen it since? Was there definitely no regurgitation during ga also?

Hope maybe helps

Re: Not sure what I'm doing wrong?

Ooo interesting! Im sure these reactions are made more likely if the route of administration is incorrect. Very good to know. Now I have to say to the vet though :/ thanks again!!

Re: Not sure what I'm doing wrong?

We use sevo, i love it, very good recoveries, that's why I couldn't understand these 3. Which brand of Buprenorphine are you using? Might be worth checking the sheet as we use buprenodale. Everything other than routine stuff and bitch spays get methadone. It'll depends on your induction agent too and gas and procedure. We use alfaxan and protofol and have very nice recoveries x

Re: Not sure what I'm doing wrong?

Yeah vetergesic and acp! Didn't realise that, the vet had told me to! Maybe that could be causing issues then? And yeah we wait around 30mins. One of the dogs actually had a very odd recovery, initially recovered well and normal and then nearly regressed back into being very sedated looking. It had had vet/acp subcut. So this could have been why if its not licensed subcut?

Re: Not sure what I'm doing wrong?

Are you premeding Sc with vetergesic?
