We were advised not to use Advocate & Milbemax together. Its something to do with the fact that they both contain Milbemycin.

Our protocol is Advocate monthly & Drontal every 3 months as we are in a rural area.

Can use milbemax monthly with stronghold but milbemax never full eliminates lungworm! Advocate covers for everything except tapeworm and ticks - hence drontal for tapeworm and if ticks a problem use frontline spray on feet and head every two weeks. Panacur granules for 2weeks are used to treat lungworm. We had an 11month old pup die this week from this parasite!! Please everyone advise owners to worm their dogs especially nosiey pups!!

Re: worming protocols

Eating slug & snails isn't the only way to catch lungworm - you can get the larvae in the snail trail too so eating grass could be a possible transmission route, as is drinking out of puddles and lifting toys which have been left out in the garden - at least thats what our Bayer folks say!!!

Re: worming protocols

Hi Ruby.

Advocate in my opinion is the best product to use for Angiostorngylus Vasorum.. however, you cant prevent A.vasorum, only treat it - I leant that at a Bayer Seminar few months back!

The only way a dog can catch it, is by eatting an effected slug/snail so the dog is unlikely to catch it by eatting grass.. but I guess you never know! lol

Also, I never knew you cant use milbemax / advocate at same time??.. we have and no probs reported.. has anyone had anything reported, like overdosing?

They shouldn't be given together... I'm pretty sure that milbemax should be given first then 4 days later Advocate applied.... it's all to do with not overdosing on one ingredient, especially in dogs that weigh in at the smaller end of the weight regime for Advocate.... eg dogs that weigh 11kg get given the 10-25kg Advocate and a milbemax, then they are effectively being overdosed... The best thing to do is contact your Advocate Rep.... They came to our practice to give a useful(if not some what scary!)
