We have a very big (70 kg) great dane coming in for castration next week. I have monitored the anaesthetics of large dogs before without problem using a circle. In my new practice they only have parallel lacks for patients >10kg. I was wondering

Re: Large dog for anaesthetic

i think really you need a circle system with a 5l/ 6l bag on it. we had a 70 kg dane in a few weeks ago and she was happy as larry on the circle! no problems at all, and from memory the flow rate was pretty low. x it is a bit of a cost, but to be honest i wouldn't be using a lack on anything over 20kg anyway just because of cost, and achieving a good flow rate. may be speak to your boss and get him to get the wallet out ! x x

Re: Large dog for anaesthetic

Yea i agree it will be really expensive. And very true we do get a number of dogs in 30+ kg so i will have a word with the boss and try and sell it as money saving purchase. Im just worried im not actually going to get the flow rates i need for this big fella. I found my old notes and i was right on my flow rate ranges. Ill check the machine when im back in work tomorrow. No capnography unfortunately. Thanks for your help. Ill let you know how we get on!

Re: Large dog for anaesthetic

Sorry for the dodgy punctuation, not sure what happened there.

Re: Large dog for anaesthetic

Using a lack for this size of dog is very uneconomical. I get anything from 12 to 20 litres per minute, depending on resp rate.

What do the practice normally use on large dogs , I appreciate that it is not a regular occurance to anaesthetise such a large dot, but you must

Surely get dogs of about 30kg regularly.

You may get away with lower flow if you have capnograpy, but the amount of volatile agent used and subsequent disposal of waste still

Gives a great argument for getting a circle system. Semi disposable circles are available for around £150.

Sorry i can't be of more help.
