With regards to local rules every member of staff involved in radiography within a practice should have read and signed these. Also your practice should of appointed a Radiation Protection Supervisor, who is someone within the practice who is responsible for overseeing the use of radiography equipment and the protection of staff members. They are there to ensure safe working practice is carried out by members of staff. Also they should have appointed a Radiation Protection Advisor, who is someone outside the practice and they are responsible for advising the practice on protecting employees and the public from harmful effects of radiation. Also the installation of new pieces of radiation equipment, critical incidents etc.. Bothy he names of both these roles should be documented in your practice's local rules. Also you should have a look at other legislation such as IRR99 (Ionising Radiation Regulations 99). Any other information feel free to ask.

Re: Radiographic monitoring equipment

Hi Kayleigh,

Your practice should have a copy of the "local rules" which has a lot of information regarding radiation etc so have a read through those. Also any nursing textbook will have information too.

With regards to monitoring equipment you can discuss the use of dosemeter badges. You should have one if you are working anywhere near xray. These are plastic badges containing xray film that clip onto your top (ideally down south I.e. near ovaries/testicles) and monitor how much radiation you are exposed to. In my experience they generally always come back with a zero reading. I think you can now get ones that you where near your eyes but I dont think these are very common.

You could discuss the use of protective clothing e.g. lead aprons, gloves and thyroid protectors and mention safe distances away from primary beam etc. Everything you should need will be in a nursing textbook or you can ask members of staff you work with.

Hope Ive helped a bit
