My very elderly crf cat has oa. She has been coping fine with just yumove but this last week is struggling. She cant jump up on sofa anymore so have had to make her some steps up and is sleeping more. What pain relief would be safest to give her

Re: kidney cat with oa

the 25mg are tablets I crush it and mix it in my mogs food and she takes it perfectly (she is a nightmare to tablet) my girl is like a kitten again on it, I never noticed how bad she was until we started her on it and now she's playing again

Re: kidney cat with oa

I gave my kitty with kidney disease and OA meloxicam dosed for her weight. Improved her mobility enough that she was more comfortable moving around and eating more comfortably. It's a trade-off, but in our case it worked well.

Thanks for finding out for me. We have an account with summit so will dig out their price list tm. Do you dose with the whole capsule or can they be opened and put on food? Thanks again. Fingers crossed can get her a bit more mobile :)

Re: kidney cat with oa

Hey Nicky....sorry for taking so long.....ok it is safe to use gabapentin in cats with kidney issues.....using a dose of 3-5mg/kg once daily should be good for her (it is excreted via the kidneys but metabolised in the liver) the reason I thought about it is cos my old girl is on it and is doing fantastically with it you can get 25mg tablets from summitt pharmaceuticals easily and split down (you might be able to get 10mg's as well I'm not sure)

If that doesn't work you can use low dose meloxicam (my friend is going to dig out the paper she has on it) but she recommended gabapentin 1st line (she is a top notch anaesthetist and she sorts out all our pain management side of things as well

Good Luck!

Re: kidney cat with oa

Yes steph if you could find out.
