Thank you Nick for the JAK info, I asked our current supplier who said that it was the responsibility of the practice and they didn't supply individual badges e.g. They could supply us with a locum badge which they change quarterly but we would then be responsible for trying to track down any 'readings' that came back - nightmare. I will inform our current locum on all of this next week.
Glad to have started a discussion on something new and useful !!!

Re: Locums and monitoring badges ?
A lot of practices have a couple of locum monitoring badges spare for a vet and nurse. As long as the xray log book is filled in correctly, it's easy to trace back to who was wearing what badge on a particular date.
As it only gives the cumulative dose over a two month period you won't be able to pin point when the exposure occurred.

Re: Locums and monitoring badges ?
Hi,

As I am quite new to locuming (as of Feb this year) this issue is of current interest to me!

I am taking personal responsibility for my monitoring as I will then be able to see my cumulative total (one would hope it would be nil result, of course...). Although (some) practices have offered me a locum badge I've said, thanks but no, as the on-going recording of any exposure/my individual running total wouldn't necessarily be very clear to me after I'd left the place. Mostly, the submission of the 'locum' badge to the monitoring company would occur after I had left the practice, so unless I asked that practice what the result was, I wouldn't know if there was a concern. As Nick says, it's best to be personally responsible for your health & safety. I don't want to risk it for an irradiated biscuit, haha!

It does raise the following question in my mind; when we change practices (even say from one permanent position to another permanent position) should we be taking our 'running total' with us to the new practice?

Ali h
cumulative exposure record would be nice but as i am part time I wouldn't be able to financially afford the costs involved for sending my own badge off.

We were never told any result in practice when i was permanent staff unless there was an abnormal result so it would be up to the practice to inform whoever was wearing that badge during that time. I'm not unduly worried about it- I take all necessary radiation precautions when involved with xrays etc. My old head nurse was exposed due to a fault with the xray machine while she was positioning an animal and was right under the beam the machine went off by itself and her badge came back with no exposure. These days I use a microwave far more than an xray machine but that radiation isn't monitored.

with insurance etc locuming is getting to be not worth the extra pay rate.

Re: Locums and monitoring badges ?

Hi,
