One has stabilized perfectly on Felimazole the other is being more difficult. He was sick on Felimazole and Vidalta 10mg SID has sent him low/low normal (8-15 on ref range) on various blood tests. Every other day dosing

Re: Hyperthyroid cats -anyone tried transdermal treatments?

We used to use the topical methimazole often at home. Two problems: it does buildup on the ear a bit if not rubbed in fully, so that the ear becomes scaly-looking. We used to recommend using alternate ears EOD. Other problem is (as others have mentioned), it is not as stable and the efficacy of this preparation cannot be guaranteed. However, it is easy to apply and great for cats that cannot easily be pilled and where other treatments are not an option.

She had a thyroidectomy at the age of 12 and then went on to have 4 hyperthyroid free years before the other gland went. She had been treated medically initially but eventually was not responding so well to the medication so we opted for thyroidectomy (it helped that I worked with a vet at the time who was a dab hand at the op!). Second time round we just stuck with medical tx, she did well on 10mg vidalta for a good year but then got to the stage where 15mgs was too much and 10mg not enough. We stuck with treatment for as long as her quality of life was good.

Re: Hyperthyroid cats -anyone tried transdermal treatments?

Hyper T : see link below, unsure if you have it there?

you get 3 x 1ml syringes and start them on 0.05ml applied to the pinna (alternate daily) once daily. You then repeat T4 after 10-14 days . so far each cat has been within normal ranges at this stage so very happy owners.

summit will deliver next day if ordered before 2pm. I also did a price comparison and its pretty much the same cost as vidalta and felimazole

Re: Hyperthyroid cats -anyone tried transdermal treatments?

how about carbimazole 5mg (yes I know Vidalta is the licensed product but the doseage is just too high for some cats and as you shouldnt be crushing or splitting Vidalta whereas you can with carbimazole). We have one cat at work that is on carbimazole 5mg as neither felimazole or vidalta suited and touchwood we are now getting somewhere near - ok its not once daily dosing as it would be with vidalta but it does seem to be suiting this cat. Another tip is do not get your carbimazole through Dunlops unless you want to pay through the nose - we get ours through Munroes(found on vetcel at a fraction of the price)

Re: Hyperthyroid cats -anyone tried transdermal treatments?

i've not used it, but have mixed feelings about it, I would not use it if you have small children who might rub it off or if your other cat grooms the one you are applying it to as I have heard issues where owners who didn't wear gloves became hypothyroid and one of our nurses decided against using it because she has a little one who might rub it off. Oh and our medics aren't that convinced about its efficacy.

you don't need a special treatment cert for it any more as summit pharmaceuticals now produce and sell it in the UK, they are great and relatively quick at sending it out

I've not heard about any new meds but can ask around and see if there is any rumours at work!
