I've got a patient who the O's report has been getting progressively 'down' over the last 18 months. He is a castrated 7 year old springer spainel who used to be very playful and loved going for walks and interacting with people. Other things to consider could be some kind of spinal issue. I know that seems totally random as the dog has started this behaviour after environmental changes, but a large proportion of behavioural changes are as a result of pain and if he is growling when approached this could be the case. Spaniels are quite prone to spinal problems and the one I am thinking of in particular can be quite progressive. I had a colleague with a spaniel with a compressing disc in her spine and she started with lethargy, reluctance and difficulty to walk etc so may be worth looking into. Otherwise behavioural consultation may be necessary, maybe even trialling pain relief or something like zylkene if it is stress related?! Hope that is of some help!

Re: Dog afraid of the dark?

I would agree, get a full vet check, and specifically an eye exam, as the first step then take it from there.

Re: Dog afraid of the dark?

he could have an eyesight problem. there is a problem, can't remember what its called, that is specific to night vision problems.

Re: Dog afraid of the dark?

I would recommend a vet exam and bloods for a wellness exam to rule out any underlying medical problem first. Could it be signs of ageing? Perhaps try Vivitonin (or generic equivalent) and DAP?
