Most of the vets where i work like to use an insulin needle and syringe to draw blood from cats and small dogs, we only need 0.5ml for our analyser.
To decant the blood into a tube or into the i

Re: Performing Venipuncture

Why don't you contact ISTAT to ask what they suggest and if they would be concerned about he quality of the sample? Having that definitive "voice from above" giving the final say is usually the only way to settle something like this.

However I agree with Sal - this may be a case of picking your battles, save your energy for the big stuff....

Re: Performing Venipuncture

I dont see any point in battling over it. Until a good comparison has been run and both results compared it sounds like you will have difficulty proving anything - When somebody has decided something my experience has been that no amount of paperwork is going to alter that, but hard physical, in front of your eyes evidence might - or might not and may even surprise you. Maybe get somebody who is used to running it 'their way' to do that part of the comparison if they are more familiar with their method (quicker) they may not get the clotting problem you experienced?

I trialled a couple of the animal specific glucometers some years back after a rep told me how bad I was for using a human glucometer and guess what there was no appreciable difference in the readings they gave, and both of them read lower when compared to the same sample run on the vet test by about 0.5 mmol (which when I contacted the manufacturer is actually what they are supposed to do so the diabetic using them gets an earlier warning that they are running low and more chance to do something about it)

You know what vets and VA's who are set in their ways are like though, they need some kind of definitive proof in order to change their minds - its an up hill battle

Re: Performing Venipuncture

how about running your own comparison? 2 samples from same animal one taken your way and one taken their way and see if there is any difference?
