My partner and I are looking after one of his employers sheep and lambs this weekend. One ewe is lame on her front right and there is a thick creamy excudate above the hoof and a blood tinged excudate from the hoof itself.
not so good. the whole right side of the hoof is infected. from the cornary band down it's soft and sore for her. she was a three legged soul running up with her lamb for breakfast. I cut down the side to let it weep and flushed out the coronary band and the tip of the hoof which was bleeding. she actually was quite good about the soak until her lamb started calling. We gave her some pellets to keep her mind off the soaking and got it in the water for 5mins! So I was pleased about that. I dried it off real good and then soaked it in green spray. Not sure what to do. I tried to ring the farmer friend but he didn't answer his phone. We're going to call the owner later today after we feed dinner, I don't want to worry him too much on his holiday when he's coming home tomorrow. I've done all I personally can do really. Thank you so much for your help.
Not normally, but I bumped into this thread, and have deleted those remarks which I thought were hurtful, and which didn't really add anything to the debate.

I don't think there's much point in raking over the coals. But a good rule of thumb if you think someone is 'having a go', is to ALWAYS give the benefit of the doubt, and rise above it or ignore it completely.

I am not singling out anyone for that piece of advice. It applies to everyone, self included!

In fact, I thought I learned my lesson about ten years ago, when an exchange of emails between me and my American employer soon descended into all-out nucular (sic) war, and nearly ended in the courts. All of which could have been avoided with a telephone call.

But no, I still get the occasional email which makes my blood boil, and I still occasionally react to it. Without exception, I always find out afterwards that I've over-reacted to it!

As a rule, if I am about to go ballistic, I no longer use email to reply. I pick up the phone. Members of this forum don't necessarily have that luxury (ie you don't know each other's phone numbers). But one answer to this is: if you think someone is having a pop at you in the forum, FIRST CLARIFY with a private conversation. And if you want to have a raging argument, it may be best to do it with the private conversation feature so that neither side can accuse the other of trying to make anyone look silly.

Re: Sheep

Lets draw a line under this and move on.
There is no need for any vendetta against anyone here so lets put a stop to it all right here, right now.

If anyone cares to challenge me on that, pm me. I will be around for another while.

By the way, Baytril would not be much use for feet Steph! It is more a respiratory kind of drug containing enroflaxin (I think)
I made my apology a while ago and thought all was done and dusted, i'm a little on edge. I took comments like 'as they can prescribe, unlike us nurses' and 'afterall if it does need abios, then he/she is the only one who can prescribe them.' as personal 'reminders' of the thread a week or two ago. It felt a bit personal and because i know I was in the wrong and was misunderstood, i'm still a bit defensive about it so i responded. there are no vendettas from my side of the boat. i've not made any personal attacks to anyone nor have i jumped into threads and posted unuseful replies just to make a point. which is what i felt was going on.

I think everyone is fully aware by now i'm pretty hot on asking the vet first and not suggesting non qualifieds or non vets to advise or prescribe medication use. To assume I think differently would be very mistaken. I asked my question about the sheep to find out if it was worth trying anything that I would be able to do with out a vet first, then to get some advice as to if it was serious enough to call a vet just from some details, or if it could be left til monday. i didn't know if the purple spray would be sufficiant or if I could do something more to make her comfortable or prevent her from being shot as much as i could.

Thanks for your concern though Paula, you're such a nice person and portray yourself this way. I wish I was more personable but i seem to stick my foot in my mouth in writing.. it's rather frustrating not being able to express myself the way I would like. I'm in no way a nasty person. but i can see how i come across that way. i just type the way I think and with out tone and physical conversation it gets misconstrued.

For example: you some how got that I wanted to use Baytril for the sheep's feet... That wasn't what i was trying to say. I was saying we kept things like Baytril and that some farmers do the same keeping some Rx from the vet when they come out to see the animals on site for emergencies or for regular use for persistant or chronic infections. I wasn't saying specifically Baytril. I hope that makes sense.

I'm so tired of being misunderstood, but it seems the only way I can learn to be around people and learn to converse appropriately and constructively is to do it! But i feel like it's really hard. I didn't have a very sociable life as a child. My mother was very busy with her own life and didn't have time for me or mine. We moved around a lot and I was never anywhere long enough to make friends. I was isolated in school because i had a learning disablity and was on medication for it. i was made fun of and kept out of groups in class because i wasn't able to focus well. I suffer a lot from self esteem problems. Until my mother died I wasn't even aware I had social skill problems. since then i have woken up and tried to self help online and with some of my friends I have made here in the UK. I also speak to a professional therapist weekly. This new job finally getting to go to school like i've always wanted to has be such a positive thing for me but also very daunting as i immediatly remember how bad i did in school and how horrible my mother made me feel about my school work. I'm scared and i'm very defensive. so i have a reply for everything and i have trouble just shutting up sometimes. I'm sorry. I hope you can understand and take me with a grain. I'm just teething and i don't mean any harm. Thanks for all your help guys and I hope we can move on. I will keep you posted on the ewe tomorrow. Hope she's alright.

One thing that was said that worried me. Stephb said that they had "baytril and stuff on the farm to use at their discretion". If there was medication on the sheep farm l assume you would have used it?If this is the case it would be highly irresponsible especially with the paperwork that is needed for farm animals and could have resulted in major problems for the farmer.

No I wouldn't have used anything until I spoke to a vet Carolyn. But i can see where you might have be able to assume this. :) I plan on having a future in veterinary nursing, i'm not going to throw it all away using unprescribed drugs on animals I don't know with out the advice of a vet. The horse breeding facility I worked at was a very professional facility that had a vet out almost every week and a vet tech that worked there regularly. We were left some drugs to use only if needed and were given the instruction to do so by a qualified at our discretion.

Re: Sheep

One thing that was said that worried me.
