I am wondering if I'm doing it right though, I've basically just been

Re: Calculations for weight loss

I'm not setting up weight clinics, just wanted to check my calculations. I found a thing online designed by the nutritionists at Walthams that actually comes up with the same calories as I have so I'm happy to stick with what I have.

Thanks for all replies though.

Re: Calculations for weight loss

Oh yeah sorry i didn't mean to put the + 70 there aha! Oh i didn't know that they didn't use that anymore, i was taught to use it in uni a few years ago and didn't realise they'd stopped using it for ill animals and only for growing etc. Thank you!

Re: Calculations for weight loss

I would be concerned using just the BER for weight loss, have you been using their current weight or the target weight? I fear that using this may cause the weight loss to occur too rapidly. If you want some help in setting up weight loss clinics successfully then go to this website and get in touch with Shelley and she might be able to help you http://www.pet-slimmers.com or get in touch with your prescription diet rep (RCW/Hills/Purina) as they all offer help and support

You do tend to find that the BER does give a lot less food than the feeding guides on any packs anyway.

Terri-Ann under 5kg BW BER is just 60 xBW and illness factors have been classed as redundant for the past few years now (longer in human medicine), the only time we use factors is in growing animals, lactating animals or those we require to gain weight etc with these cases we would use the MER 110x BW0.75 Kcal/day for any size animal

but then if they're ill etc you have to take that in to account and then i think you multiply the illness factor by the BER.

There may be other calculations but that's what i usually use if i need to work it out.

For weight loss though i've never used commercial food unless it's a light version and then i go on the recommended feeding plan for what the dog should actually weight and not its current body weight, so i guess that can be done for the normal versions of the food?

Otherwise i just put the animals on weight loss food and go from there :)
