My husband now runs our pet sitting and dog walking business. Who says people can't afford it?! Some days he has 9 dog walks!!! Takes a while to build up regular clients, but 4 years down the line we are still going strong.

Check out www.dogsit.com you get insurance, a good support network and you can use the Logo in your adveritising.

Re: need to earn some extra money

Hello, sorry it is Cliverton not Charlton address www.cliverton.co.uk, I have been paying £320 a year (that includes insurance for a dog training club) but I'm switching to Charlton for £170 a year. If you tell them exactly what you want cover for they might be able to bring the price down.

The yellow pages/thomson delivering didn't seem to go down to well, but I don't mind doing it, I do the local area so driving wasnt that bad and got help from mum or dad and boyfriend, used shopping trolley and ikea bags usually get 500 books done in a short day. And I just stored the books behind the sofa in the living room before they went out.

Hope you find something thats helps

My area was relatively small only 750! You have to go to a place to pick the books up, then store them at your house until the week that they're due out. If they don't fit through letter box, you're not allowed to leave them on a door step or in plain view of a street, so if there is no access to the back door you should go back the following day.

They pay wasn't bad but I did spend a lot on petrol & I thought I didn't use the car too much. It must have been the sheer weight of the books using up all the fuel.

You also need really good shoes cos they're a lot of walking involved - I took my Gran's shopping trolley to carry them, saved my back!

Re: need to earn some extra money

Found an add for delivering Yellow pages

Avon - been doing it for 18 months. First few campaigns in a new area paid well, but now I struggle to make the minimum required for commission (just under £80), and people are fed up of books every 3 weeks, and you have to pay for the books, bags, samples etc, but at least you don't have to fork out initially for a kit (thye do take admin fee of £15 across the first two campaigns though). Very little support, even got the divisional manager waiting to ring me back because lower people never reply.

Thompson - tried it for one year. Had to go collect the books, in an estate car you can just about get 500 in..... then delivering you have to drive and keep moving the car even if you carry 30 at a time to nearby houses. Fuel consumption goes through the roof and when you get about £100 a round it's not worth it - think also about dogs in gardens, vicious letterboxes, no boxes, houses that aren't numbered or are numbered randomly and you pull your hair out trying to deliver them. Decided not to do yellow pages as these are much thicker and heavier.

Bar work - too old and not got the figure most managers want....

Dog walking/cat sitting, no-one can afford it.

Receptionist part time - keep applying for doctors surgery etc type jobs, but never get a reply.

Ebay - had some good stuff and sold it, waiting for another cheap listing day which saves fees. But not much stuff worth anything.

Boot fairs - this time of year it's too wet and you don't get the people spending, most want items for 50p or less, and then haggle.

gardening - might offer to do some people's gardens, hard work, but again with the credit crunch people can't afford to pay others to do it.

medical research - don't do it, it does go wrong

envelope stuffing - paid peanuts, difficult to get the companies to give you work witout up front fees.

proof reading - thought I'd be good at this as I often spot mistakes in text. But they all want you to take a course first before giving you work, and that costs over £100, who do they think we are ? we need money so that's why we try to get other wrk, and can't afford to shell out first.

claim any benefit you can -I can't get any because I'm the sort of person the government doesn't want to help - english born and bred, middle age, no kids, self employed (but earning less that the "dole" money on an average week, got a small amout of savings in case of emergencies.

premium bonds - less percentage chance of winning these days, btu you can get your money straight back out again unlike the lottery

crafts - try making something people might buy, handmade cards are out, because everyone is doing them, and when you used to get £2 a card now even shops do "handmade" equivalents for less than £1.

jam making - very popular our way, just need the trees to pick

fruit picking - wrong time of year at the moment, back breaking work, need to live in the country, and preferably be of East European origin to get the chance of cheap labour work.

self sufficient and sell excess produce - this one we're trying as my husband is also out of work, so we're about to go under dramatically - even as much as me having to go back to IT soon, if I can't get more nursing work. ok so you have to pay out for seeds and compost (but our compost has an added secret ingredient (which actually I may even try to sell) and our plants are rocketing up. When we get the produce or excess plants we'll try to sell outside the house (in a little barrow and manned during the day), or at a boot fair.Don't know if it will raise money but have you seen the price of veg in the supermarkets? You could also make and sell bread, cakes, rolls etc, but if you do it regularly then you need a hygiene licence.

When we decided to do it we thought "900 books how much room could that take up" = trust me, the answer is a heck of a lot of room!

not worth the money for the hours if u ask me, a lot easier ways of making some money

I too am in the same boat, saving for a wedding so i took on another job. I work shift and have been lucky enough to find part time work at a local pizza take away. I let the guy know a week in advance what my nursing rota is and we fit in a few shifts that way. He is happy as long as i can work at least a friday or a saturday.

There are options such as delivery driving and counter assistants so that might be worth looking into?

bar work might be an option as they often need people to work late shifts which might tie in with your shifts at work (unless you do on calls), or you could try a cleaning agency, they're often much more flexible with the shifts they can offer you which helps if you work a rolling rota like i do.

I also deliver thompsons/yellow pages once a year when they come out, there is usually an advert in the local paper as they are always desperate for people to do it. Again it is hard work but I try to allow a full day and just do the whole lot in one go. For 400-500 books think its about £90-£120,

Why don't you try cat sitting? It is something i started doing a few years back, go in twice a day to feed and fuss cats. It is easily done around a full time job (to and from work) whilst earning a few bucks I charge £15 for a twice daily visit, feeding AM and spending a bit of time with them in the evening. The fee may depend on the area you are in as Im in North London. See if your practice will allow you to put a notice up in the waiting room, clients feel happier if a vet nurse is looking after their cat/s and it's nicer for them as they don't have the stress of going to a cattery and we all know how cat are affected by stress.

Dont do:
Avon.....takes up huge amounts of time, no support and you have to sell lots to get some commission
Ann summers....ditto the above plus you have to fork out for the kit
Kleeneze...lots of trawling about.

Just my opinion!
