The theory is the 'at risk' breeds and the breeders of those dogs seem to be advocating it. I guess like everything, there will always be those that fall outside of the norm..

Re: Gastropexy at time of neutering,

A former colleague of mine elected to have her 2 female mastiff crosses have one during speying.

No problems from the vet, said it wasn't too much to add on to a spey.

I don't think she researched it much, but works at a charity practice as sees loads so planning in advance! Now 6 yrs old and neither has an issue.

Re: Gastropexy at time of neutering,

Which dogs do you decide to do it to? I've seen GDV in a tiny Yorkie, Basset Hound, Collie etc. Only done 1x on a Great Dane and 1x Pointer. The other 13 were cross breeds and small dogs!

Re: Gastropexy at time of neutering,

Thank you, thank you, both. Perhaps a search for american academic studies would better focus your search?

Having said the above, have just found an Australian paper...(Australian College of Veterinary Science)..still talks about what is done in North America though...!

http://www.anzcvs.org.au/surgery_assets/science%20week%20 2008/proceedings%202008%20master%20compressed.pdf#page=133

...Most North American surgeons use an antral gastropexy procedure to fix the gastric antrum to the right abdominal wall. The 5 major antral

gastropexies used in North America are the tube gastrostomy (Parks, 1976), the incisional gastropexy

(MacCoy, 1982), the circumcostal gastropexy (Fallah, 1982), the belt-loop gastropexy (Whitney, 1989) and

the ventral midline gastropexy (Meyer-Lindenberg, 1993). Gastropexy can also be performed

laparoscopically (Hardy, 1995)......The incisional gastropexy is popular among many North American surgeons but

unfortunately no good retrospective studies are available to determine its clinical efficacy...

Re: Gastropexy at time of neutering,

When i was at congress last April, one of the speakers mentioned that the US forces do this to all dogs as a precaution. Maybe not what your looking for as there are only certain breeds used for this, but could be a good starting point to search for papers. Im afraid i dont know if its a common procedure for non military dogs over there.
