My 4 year old whippet started with colitis 3-4 weeks ago. It initially cleared then recurred 1 week later, then again a week later and this time has only been ok for 2 days and bad again. He has never been a squitty dog

Re: Dog recurrent colitis - advice please!

[quote user="NickyVN"]

Almost relieved as at least I know what it is now and he is on the correct meds, hopefully its just this that has caused all the problems. Wil be restesting him again after meds to check it has definitely cleared.

ive just got the faecal results back today and shes tested positive for campylobacter so maybe something will show on the faeces.

have you tested for pancreatitis?

I feed Cocoa on beta too which I think helps.

I also give her yumpro daily.

Your dogs symptoms sound absolutely like a whippet patient I encountered, a year or so back. As soon as he was wormed effectively the problems resolved. (Hookworm is a zoonosis, so be careful yourself....).

Wishing him better.

A really nasty case of hookworm can cause severe gut inflammation; stick an endoscope up there and have a look. Advocate did wonders for the last dog I saw with this; alternatively, just in case you've got giardia lurking in there, 10 days of fenbendazole is a good idea too.

Re: Dog recurrent colitis - advice please!

Hi, thanks for the replies. I took him in again this morning as really bad night with him, lots of unproductive straining and he was moaning like he had abdo pain. Still no final results on the faecal test but hoping that will come on Monday. Vet has given him a shot of steroid to try to stop the straining as its impossible to get him to stop as he is convinced he needs to go, and some amoxicillin and more probiotics just as a cover until results in. If nothing on those then he has advised the bloods mentioned above as the next step, and will go down dietary trial route. Any idea what the ingredients are in the RCW hypoallergenic - is it the hydrolysed protein like z/d? Would prob go with RCW as thats the brand he is used to. Anyone know how palatable the hypoallergenic diets are - he can be fussy with his food.

I am such a pathetic owner - been really tearful this morning thinking of all the worst possible scenarios -maybe the lack of sleep is getting to me!!

Re: Dog recurrent colitis - advice please!

My collie dog has suffered with colitis for years. He does have some mild food intolerances but i found that fibre was his best friend and sorted his colitis out! I started him on Beta Salmon and Rice and protexin profibre (not too expensive for a big tub). he was on this for ages and it really helped. He's now on Hills w/d which has worked even better! Hope this helps!

Re: Dog recurrent colitis - advice please!

One of my bosses is really big on putting dogs on Chappie - low fat and not a lot of crap in it.

Hopefully,(in the nicest possible way) the faecal sample comes back with something - at least it's an answer.

Re: Dog recurrent colitis - advice please!

we would usually recommend a diet trial initially for any GI issues using RCW hypo/Hills ZD for a minimum of 6 weeks, as well as full bloods including B12, folate and TLI.

Any other problems with him coinciding with these episodes?

If food trial has no effect/nothing obvious on bloods then radiographs and ultrasound followed by upper and lower GI endoscopy with biopsies

This is the way round we work our GI cases up that come in
