I've just started my second year of VN training and I'm completely stuck with a certain area of fluid therapy. I'm fine with calculating amounts of fluid to be given over a 24 hour period but I got asked the other day

Re: Urgent help for fluid therapy!

one vet I know works it out as 2mls/kg/hour

which does work out as 48ml/kg/24hr

Re: Urgent help for fluid therapy!

ok this is how I would do it

using the example you give of wanting to administer 700mls in 8 hours.

you need to infuse 700mls in 8 hours so 700mls divided by 8 = 87.5mls per hour

to get the mls/minute rate you would then divide 87.5mls by 60 =@ 1.45mls per minute

then you need to determine how many drops/ml your giving set delivers

assuming it is 20 drops/ml the calculation would then be 1.45 (mls per minute rate) x 20 (drops per ml delivered by giving set) which will give you a drop per minute rate of @29

Re: Urgent help for fluid therapy!
I did this yesterday and the vet advised me to divide the total amount needed (maintenance + deficit + ongoing losses) by 24 to get the hourly rate, then times it by how many hours you will do it over (8 in your case).

Seemed to work well on the dog I was calculating it for!

Hope that helps.

x
Hmm is it just me, or is this not working out correct?? the only reason I done it was because it looked a nice short way of calculating, but either I am doing it wrong or it is wrong.

I calculated a maintenance(guessed and also took into consideration deficit and losses.

My calculation was eg 700ml divided by 24 would give you 29.1ml/hr, but if you then times by 8 the given hours it goes up to a whopping 233ml hr which would mean the 700ml would last 3 hours instead of 8.

Re: Urgent help for fluid therapy!

right so you take the amount of fluid required over 8hrs (x)

X divided by 8 = mls/hr

mls/hr divided by 60 = mls/min

mls/min times drip factor = drops/min

60 divided by drops/min = drops/sec

If using a fluid pump then stop at the mls/hr

500 divided by 8 will give you the amount needed per hour

Divide by 60 = ml/min

x drip factor = drops/min

Re: Urgent help for fluid therapy!

50ml/kg/24hrs

divided by 24 = ml per hour

Then you could x that by 8 to get ml/8hr...or by however many hours you want

Or take your 24hrs rate and divide by 3 as theres 3 lots of 8 hours in 24

Re: Urgent help for fluid therapy!

Calculating for hours

if its 24hrs I use calculation 24x60x60/divide by the amount of fluid then divide by the drip factor.

8 hours would be 8x60x60/divide by amount of fluid then divide by drip factor.

So basically whatever the hours then x60 x60.
