The best bits of advice that i got for Caesars were:

1/ propofol induction but wait 15-20 mins BEFORE removing pups to allow the propofol to have worn off- otherwise you end up with sleepy puppies to revive.

2/ Also she reminded us that even under GA, the safest place for those pups is in the bitch so don't rush to get them out and overwhelm the nursing team. Take it steady and have time to revive each pup fully before removing the next one.

Re: protocols for caesarians

I've never seen a pre-med being used in a caesar. All the cases I've seen have been emergencies so it was a case of knock her out, get the pups and wake her up. I've only ever seen Propofol used and have never pre-oxygenated unless mum is a brachy breed and she NEEDS the oxygen, I've seen her on O2 while all the prep work is done. Normally try to shave mum up before she's induced to try and reduce the anaesthetic time.

One of the lectures at congress mentioned a time of 15-20 minutes from induction to getting the pups out.

Pain relief wise, I think it's generally opioids like Buprenorphine - ? don't get excreted in milk?

And always make sure mum's abdomen is cleaned off with some clean water after surgery so her teats don't taste like hibi, LOL
