sorry, dont mean to put a downer on this but its a point to think about

good luck with your search and keep us updated!!

Re: Apprenticeship In TP Registered Practice Wanted

hey there, im gona be frank... im in the same situ as you looking for a trainee position, i when to college and got every qualification known to man, gcses, alevels even got offered a place on a VN degree course at harper adams- but it was too far for me)

basically they mean sh*t, what practices want is EXPERIENCE!! which is why at the moment im pretty much throwing myself at as many practices i can manage while working aswell (i work nights so i can be free through the day), like most of the posts on here have said practices give ALOT when hiring a trainee in staff training, money, time etc so they want to see your committed by seein your willing to offer your services for free primerily until a job is available, as horrid as it sounds my alevels are losing worth day by day coz unless you want to do the degree its just not what practices are looking for as th NVQ is work-based so a candidate has to be used to the work place not a college desk

hope this helps, dont be detirred, its a great profession i cant wait to get a place and start my training

also a practice ive recently been interviewed at said that they would want a trainee to work for them for at least a year before putting them through training due to settling, costs etc, i.e. they need to be sure its what you want

good luck

Re: Apprenticeship In TP Registered Practice Wanted

Also be aware that not a lot of practices will start your training immediately. Alot like to give the student at least a few months to settle in to the job and the team. That then reduces the risk of them losing a lot of money if the students decides its not really for them.

Re: Apprenticeship In TP Registered Practice Wanted

And I agree with Gillian, I am not surprised that training placements are gold dust!

It is a massive commitment for the practice both financially and not to mention the time and dedication required of staff and assessors!

Dont give up with finding a placement though.....you'll get there.

Re: Apprenticeship In TP Registered Practice Wanted

I'd agree with Maisy - don't assume that just because you have a place at college (which, to be fair, aren't difficult to get if qualifications are in place) that a TP will be able to let you go there this year. There is a lot of workload on the practice to train a student - it isn't just a case of giving you one day off per week. And there is a waiting list of students who wish to train. Also, who do you anticipate will pay the not insubstantial fees? It isn't the cost of tuition fees - they are low because they are subsidised by the LSC. It is the total cost of training:

-giving the trainee a day off - paying them for this and also overtime for other staff to cover

-internal verification visits - approx £250 per time

-cost of iv checking your portfolio

-cost of exams

and various others! Usually running into more than £10,000 per year per student.

I do wish you every luck, and it is worth persevering, but I am only telling you this so that you be careful how you word your application. We receive lots of applications from people telling me they have 'secured a place at college already' which, to be fair, only annoys me! It kind of assumes I will then put them through college immediately - which isn't usually possible.

Anyway, sorry to be negative and I do wish you every luck in securing a place. Keep persevering and you'll get one eventually.

By the way, we are local to you but sorry - no places at the moment!

Re: Apprenticeship In TP Registered Practice Wanted

If you haven't done so, I'd send out CVs to all TPs in areas you can travel and follow upwith a letter/phone call every few months. Most places will keep CVs on file, and rarely have to advertise student vacancies as they have a lot of applicants on file.

I would mention though that just because you have a college place doesn't mean a practice would send you to that college. Some places have a waiting list for college and there may be other students first in line to train before you.
