I would have to own up to being one of those people who never wanted to do anything from being very young than being a VN. I acheived my aim and found it very hard when I had to give up work to look after my children. My husband did not want me to return ! He s not a great animal lover! But I did, and unfortunatly my first few months were a nightmare. I used to go home in tears some days saying I was going to hand in my notice,

But after those first months it all came back to me including my confidence in Anaesthesia- which was at a low.

Now I am happy to work for at least another 8years while my other half considers early retirement!

Hi,

It's a shame that your first year doesn't count but I think the vn course has improved.

I've been nursing for 13 years and think that vet nursing (in the right practice !!) is on the up. The hours may not have improved greatly but the pay is getting there and with regulation and so on I am optimistic that pay and recognition are on the horizon.

I couldn't say whether training for something else would be as rewarding but I personally feel that if you think that you've missed the nursing you should give it a go again...

Go for it.

Although I am a qualified VN . I too had 7yrs out of practice and various part time jobs around school hours. Just send your Cv to all practices in your area. There is a shortage of nurses, unfortunatly there is a shortage of trainee places also. But, providing you have the backing of your other half( lack of money!) there is no reason why you could not succeed.

Im not sure why the RCVS do not allow you to do just the 2nd year, could have something to do with the ongoing changes in the VN course.
