Just after a bit of advice. Cockatiel with breathing problems, yawning lots too and the occasional sneeze but nothing frequent. Was wheezing lots yesterday but that stopped when he went to sleep but not occured today that I have noticed

Re: respiratory problems in tiels

Thanks for your help and support. Took him to work this eve for euthanasia. He deteriorated in the afternoon. Much the same at noon but came home about 530 and I could just see him asking me to do it. He gave me a look I cannot describe but I knew I couldn't ignore it and I knew what he wanted me to do. He came over on the bottom of the cage to be close to me when he gave me the look. Never had to do it/make the decision before for one of my own but work were amazing and such support was given. Cakes for them all tomorrow I think!!!

His mate is eating and has stopped calling for him now (I did bring Noel home for him to see) but going to keep a very close eye on him for the next few days as he was besoted by Noel!

Hardest thing now will be work tomorrow. If I can get through that I will be Ok.

Re: respiratory problems in tiels

Oral metacam is fine.
Good luck with him :-)

Re: respiratory problems in tiels

not taken bloods yet as am worried about the anaesthetic needed for them. with bad breathing I would not know how he would get on and yes I am scared of loosing him. he has been through so much and come out of it last year I am worried this may be the end if he cannot fight it off.

Re: respiratory problems in tiels

hi,

been to work and they don't have a nebuliser so am unable to use one. have got him ontop of a mug/cup of boiling water so he gets some of the steam from that. Is metacam oral ok to use? I have cat ones so I can dose through drops easily. (Also have dog - both used on my other birds but much more difficult to dose dog for small birds (He's only 70ish gm!!)

he is accepting the steam ok at the moment. and gets very noisy breathing when he is moved from one place to another or he flaps so am trying to reduce thisas much as i can.

Freddie seems ok and he lives with him. he is 18yr old and greatly bonded to him. will take faecal samples tonight and get sent off to lab tomorrow for analysis. wont have results until thursday so hope he keeps fighting until then.

thanks for your help. I am keeping my room warm and some curtains open at night so he gets early morning so more time to eat (as do I get early morning!)

will let you know how he does but I do know illnesses like this are normally very serious so am prepared for f he doesn't make it. (as prepared as I can be).

Re: respiratory problems in tiels

You can nebulise in 100 mg baytril (2mls 5% injection) in 10 mls saline bid. That will help rehydrate as well as deliver antibiotics. Saline alone will do though.

He has PuPd but the actual faecal part is OK. We sent a group culture away and that came back clear a few months ago. All other birds in the room are OK.

Will work out the metacam dose for him. was worried about this with his drinking as worried about kidneys / liver but will put him on it too.

Re: respiratory problems in tiels

Your most likely diagnosis is psittacosis. Does he have diarrhoea? I would run some tests for this (cloacal swab/faecal Pcr) or serology. Continue with the baytril at 15 mg/kg, add metacam 0.4mg/kg. nebulisation helps these cases.
