I'm really surprised how many practices use antibiotics for routines (ie neuters rather than orthopaedics). Surely it isn't necessary unless there is concern re animal not being kept clean post op, pyoderma etc? Why overuse antibiotics when they aren't needed if good practice is carried out (ie good scrubbing technique & theatre cleanliness). Just my opinion!
Agree why overuse something we may later rely on, and because overuse it does not work.

Ortho ops yes I agree with, and have used I/V augmentin on those , but for routine ops..... just dont see the point, never used and never had a problem

Unfortunately, we dont' have a dedicated operating theatre (mixed practice, mostly LA) so asepsis is not the best, but I still have mixed feelings. Where I work routine is a TPLO/patella surgery. All our patients recieve iv antibiotics at least 30mins prior to surgery and then repeated every 90mins until end of durgery. Then it is up to each induvidual surgeon whether the patient recieves post-op repeats plus oral medication. am sure there is a paper somewhere about the use of perioperative ABs and effectiveness. wil try and dig it out and post the abstract...

Re: Antibiotics/Routine Surgery
always give long acting abs, though I know this is deemed unnecessary now especially if aseptic technique is up to scratch. What do they do with humans? elective cosmetic procedures and things?

I am not quite sure what they do in human elective procedures or small ops, but would imagine that they only give them out if absoluteluy necessary, afterall that is one of the reasons why we now have superbugs, due to the over prescribing of antibiotics and people not finishing the course.
