Or got a really good supplier?
We have found haemacell to be the cheapest (over oxy-globin!) and best alternative.
However we can not obtain it from anywhere now.......

Never heard this before, always used a pump to ensure correct rate given, and never had any problems/ always got expected result, but the logic does make sense.

Just wondering if other people do/do not use infusion pumps?

Re: haemacell

We ran out of Voluven last weekend and one of our nurses did a ring round local surgeries to see if we could borrow/steal/buy some off any of them. She was very shocked to discover many of them had never heard of either Voluven or Haemacell.

In emergency situations if you have a large breed hypovolaemic dog your vet may consider an initial bolus of hypertonic saline...?

Re: haemacell

Gelofusine is the only other gelatin based colloid but you should be able to still get hold of it and it is pretty much identical to haemocell.

As previous poster said, starch based colloids such as Voluven may be an alternative but be aware that starch based colloids are not licensed for use in animals unlike the gelatin based colloids.

To be honest it depends why you want to use it as to whether a starch or a gelatin is preferred. Starches in general (There is lots of different types) hang around in the circulation for longer (nearer to 24 hours compared to gelatins only 4-6 hours) but may have more negative side effects....If a dog was bleeding out then I would use the first one I grabbed and wouldn't worry which one it was, but if say you had a critically ill septic patient with hypotension and 'leaky' blood vessels and you needed long term circulatory support then you might prefer a starch.

I'm not sure on the price difference but the vet should follow the cascade system when selecting a colloid same as any other drug...
