The thing is, you dont need to have students to be a TP, lots have QVN doing diplomas and degree top up, so you have to be a TP for that.

The place I trained kept on all their trainees, they started of with one QVN........many moons ago, and now they have 8 plus 2 students who will have a job at the end of it.

Wev had three svns qualify this way in the last year - we have another two level 3 svns training at the mo who will sit their finals at the end of this year.I think its good as it should encourage practices to take on and train svns as financially they shouldnt be looking at it being an expense and hopefuly be able to give the svns a slightly better pay - whether this is the case or not idont know lol - would like to think it was tho!

very true - hartpury dont make u pay at all - regardless of age as the government do it all :) just the admin fees

this is why TP's shoulf be turning over students sharpish

Also quite a few practices do not pay thecollege anything to train their vns - i think if they are under 25 they get it free due to the apprenticeship scheme

my old place does

end of the day they are a training practice...the idea is to train up new students

they get to have new employees for a fraction of the cost of a QVN.

new students (in my experience) get the rubbish shifts - eg xmas day on call etc

if practices dont want to train new students why should they be allowed TP status?

most practice don't take on students for the sake of the student though, it's for the sake of the practice, to train a new member of staff. What would the point be of putting all that time effort and money into training a nurse, just for her to go and work for someone else?

I think it depends on the practice, ours gets students to sign an agreement to stay with the practice a year after qualifying. When I was at college though a couple of students only stayed til they qualified and then left unless a QVN position became available.

Do a lot of practices just train SVN's then dont give them a job??? just wondering as this is how the opening post reads.

I just thought that once you completed you were kept on, I know I was,or is that not the case in all places?

I would send your CV out anytime-like Johanna said the exam times are more regular now so SVNs could leave anytime throughout the year. It's not like before when it was just the two exam periods.

A lot of practices don't need to advertise for SVN vacancies because of the high number of potential applicants at any one time-I received 20 on spec letters last week! At least by sending your application now your details will already be there. Work experience is also a very useful way of getting yourself known to a practice for potential vacancies.

really could be any time due to students dropping off the course etc

although most students qualify/get results january and July i think, i got mine in january after sitting exams in november and december,

there is the new exam periods tho so its 4 times a year,

with thoughts to the CV get it in so practices know your interested as you dont know which places have students leaving when!
