Have GA'd guinea pigs for castration are they similar and anything I should look out for. Also any idea of the technique that will be used - again the same as guineas??

Re: Chinchilla castration

I used to do a lot at one place I worked. We used an anaesthetic chamber for induction and used to run just oxygen for the first 5 mins or so (we did have one vet who used a robinul premed and swore by it but tbh I didnt feel it made that much difference) They can be intubated, same rule as for rabbits if you dont get in after the 3rd try dont try it again, but most often have seen them maintained on a mask. The one thing that stood out for me was that most of them are really really drooly, so I always tried to keep the head a little lower and had a good supply of cotton buds and a urine catheter and syringe on hand to keep the mouth clear. They are very similar to gps anaesthetic wise. I used to get them eating just about as soon as they were moving around The fine grind oxbow used to be my favourite but if I had a real hunger striker strawberry milupa baby food usually got them started (somebody will come along now and tell me this is a no no but I only used a very very small amount and it did the job )
