I also currently have a dog and 2 rats. The cat and dog are putting up with each other and slowly getting better with each other.
My problem lies with Tink's (the cat) constant focus on my 2 dumbos

Re: Cats and rats

we have 6 cats 2 dogs 2 rats and a hamster. The rats and hamster are upstairs in various kids bedrooms, although one of the dogs belongs to our daughter and sleeps in the same room as the rats overnight. because we knew this was gonna be the case when hubby built the rats enclosure he put solid perspex doors on the front to prevent any attempt from dog / cat to get at rats or defence bites from the rats!!

we have had one incidence of cat on hamster cage (it's a Rotastak, so no chance of cat reaching hamster), but 99.9% of the time the bedroom doors are kept shut to prevent this.

I must say I agree with the others and really think you need to re-think where everyone lives in your flat to prevent any mishaps.
