Does anyone have problems with using pre mate tests and being able to use the whole box within the use by time. We are only a small practice but dont want to increase the price too much, obviously we still need to cover our costs and make a profit

Re: Pre Mate tests

You can put one of the little bottles in the freezer to preserve it, can't remember which though. The problem with sending it to a lab by mail is waiting to get the result! You could miss the best time for the bitch to be mated.

Re: Pre Mate tests

Hi,

We've just ordered some & in the past we charge the whole box out to the client as we tend to have to run more than 1 test for the animal - & if we don't then we know we have made a little profit from them!

We don't keep them in stock and the clients are aware of this and are happy to pay for the full box. We then charge a blood sample fee too. It tends to be the nurses who run it as they vets don't tend to have a lot of patinets to do it

Hope this helps

Re: Pre Mate tests

At both practices I have worked at we have never done enough tests to use all of the box, so have ended up no longer stocking them. We are lucky to have a lab locally that collects our samples in the evening so we can have results the next morning, so get them to do the testing for us now. That said, most of the breeders we have don't usually bother with testing anyway. I did speak to the lab the other day though just to clarify protocols etc in case we needed to do tests on a dog that was going to Belgium to be mated, and the guy there said they are no longer able to get pre-mate kits so are using their normal lab equipment instead, so I don't know if that means that the kits are no longer being made.
In terms of charging, I can't remember what we did charge when we used them (its been ages since we did), but I have a feeling that we charged the client for the whole kit and didn't charge as much for the blood sampling etc as we just never had someone else wanting tests before the kit went out of date. Personally I think using an external lab is more cost effective if you have one that you can rely on having quick enough turn around times, and whenever we have done this we have never had any problems with knowing the results quickly enough for the owner to get the dog mated on time.
