Do need to be kept nice and warm though as they do tend to lose heat easily as they are so skinny. We have had some cats go on for years post without any problems , think technique is important to make sure you get all the gland wihout the parathyroid.

Good Luck!

Re: felimazole

I second thyroidectomy, I've monitored the GA for plenty of them and not yet come up with a problem, so long as calcium levels have been monitored post 3 days. A friend of mine in the States used Tapazole compound as her cat refused to be pilled. I looked into getting it here, but the VMD said no and it would have cost a helluva lot to import as well. Hills y/d should be here sometime around spring next year - Low iodine dose so theoretically no need for meds.

Re: felimazole

Erm, or thyroidectomy? Yeah it may not be the gold standard but might give a cat another 6-12 happy months...? Cheaper too, and I know everyone will jump up and down about the GA risk but I have literally monitored GAs for about 100 thyroidectomys and only had probs with one - and no they dont all go into renal failure afterwards. Vet would need to be confident doing it though.

We used to be able to get a manufacturing pharmacy in Auckland to make us up this cream when i was in New Zealand but yeah it was expensive and I can't remember the cases so not sure how the treatment worked in the end. (About 8 years ago).

Good luck, cats are such a pain when you're trying to do something that's good for them!!

Re: felimazole

I think it may ony be available from abroad and you would need to get an STC for it and be able to prove to the VMD that it is necessary, unfortunately because there are 2 licensed drugs on the market (felimazole and vidalta) and aso other treatment options thyroidectomy and radioactive iodine therapy they may turn round and refuse the cert,

Has the owner tried vidalta at all or is it tabletting in general that is the problem? would they be able to afford to go for iodine therapy?

Re: felimazole

I have heard of the creamfrom a tutor at college for my Dip AVN, no idea where you get it from but think it is VERY expensive.

Re: felimazole

great will mention them x

Re: felimazole

Hi, this might help if not tried already...... had a similar problem with giving tablets to a cat long term, exhausted all bribes etc until trying' Vivitreats' made by Intervet. They are soft chews, just break a piece off + mould around tablet + cat wolfed it down and has been doing so now for last 6 months without fail. When I heard about it initially tbh I was a little concerned ie how do you know the dosing is accurate and how do you know the client is going to wear gloves to apply everytime and not be absorbing drug themselves
