im dubious about weight loss tablets. All the weight clinics I have ever done have got weight off the animal and if really struggling with diet food and exercise then refer to vet for bloods incase there is a prob internally

I feel the same really, drugs are a route I would rather not go down, and I have never had some much trouble with a weight clinic . We have just done bloods on her and there was nothing wrong on them. I'm seeing them again in a few weeks (I would have liked to see her again sooner, but unfortunately I'm on holiday), so hopefully adding in wet r/d will have had some effect, if not then I am going to try another diet. Drugs really are going to be a last resort.

Re: Slentrol

im dubious about weight loss tablets. All the weight clinics I have ever done have got weight off the animal and if really struggling with diet food and exercise then refer to vet for bloods incase there is a prob internally

Re: Slentrol
Sounds like the client we had that wondered why the RSPCA wouldn't let him take on a GSD for his wheelchair bound father.

I have used slentrol with some fantastic results.

A very dedicated o' that was overjoyed with the results ESS from 28kg down to 16kg!

Have had a female newfie from 80kg - 65kg (0' couldn't afford weight loss diets due to dog size and was getting large breed good quality food from a supplier cheaply as soiled packaging!)

A male Newfie (different o' to above) 92kg to 70kg presented for euthanasia at 6 as off legs! arthritis excerbated by weight! 18mths in post slentrol and with continued hydrotherapy still doing really well! O' feel that it saved their dogs life!

A G'ret that didnt do so well as vomited profusely since starting slentrol but she had been warned that it was a potential side effect, so owner was understanding.

That sounds really encouraging, fingers crossed if we end up using it that she doesnt get any side-effects. Her owners are blaming the r/d for her not loosing weight at the moment (even though she did initially and has only put it all back in because they havent exercised her when the weather has been bad), so I hate to think what they would be like if the ended up with diarrhoea.

Re: Slentrol

I have used slentrol with some fantastic results.

That is such a good idea!!! Anything that gets them moving - heelwork to music is another idea, and not too much stress on over worked joints.
I would definitely try a different diet as I have found some respond to some diets better than others. I have used slentrol on 3 cases - 2 of those had to stop it as it gave them terrible diarrhoea - according to their owners they are the sort of dogs who get diarrhoea easily, and the third case ended up a waste of time - client complaining couldnt diet dog as dog constantly vocalising for more food, discussed at length how slentrol works etc etc, and she stopped it after a couple of weeks as she didnt like the dog having a reduced appetite ??? It is costly so ensure people are really committed and ensure they understand it - although some people I think you may as well bang your head up a brick wall - and why is it those people alwasy own greedy chocolate labs!!
My next step if introducing canned r/d to the dogs diet doesnt work (I dont know why the owners think that wet food is going to make a difference, but I'm hoping it will have some kind fo psychological effect on them) is going to be to change her onto RCW Obesity. I'm really hiping that we can avoid drugs, it just seems so wrong to have to give a dog drugs when it can be so simple to get weight off of them with diet and exercise. Don't get me started on chocolate lab owners. We had one complain that the vet had told her the dog was overweight and couldnt see what was wrong with him, despite him being almost as wide as he is tall! I would love to take these dogs off of their owners for a month or so and feed them and exercise them properly just to prove that if they do what we tell them then their dog will loose weight.
In your experience do you find that weight clinic clients seem to be over weight themselves?

K x
Definetely, and the few that aren't are usually old ladies with angina or some other condition that means they can't exercise their dog, but will not get a dog walker or someone else to help them.
I used slentrol once and it was my most frustrating weight clinic ever!! I wont go over it all as the complete argh!!ness of the client still makes my blood boil. This was a 3yr old lab that came in weighing 63kg!!! After trying absolutely everything with said client we tried slentrol, worked like a dream weight started coming off dog was doing really well then about 6months in lucy weighed about 53 kg, was feeling more active so chased a ball in the park and subsequently aggrevated her hip arthritis, this meant she was 'off her legs' for a few hours until her NSAIDs kickec in. As a result the o was convinced that the dog 'collapsed' and so would not touch slentrol again. Within 1 month lucy was back up to 63kg!! The owner is just completely rediculous!! I got to the point where I couldnt see her anymore as I wanted to report her to the RSPCA for cruelty! Numerous other nurses and vets have tried too, daft thing is I dont understand why she comes in for the weight clinics as she ignores all advice. But anyway after my rant sorry!!....I think slentrol is a good drug if you have owner compliance and have tried other options. Just make everyone aware of the side effects. And yes Katie they do all tend to be a bit large which can make things awkward sometimes ;)
This sounds a bit like my clients, although luckily the dog doesnt have anything wrong with her at the moment to complicate matters. The owner is really keen to do agility with the dog, which I have told her she shouldnt do until she has got some weight off of the dog (she gets out of breath just walking into the consult). I was hopeful would be enougn motivation for her in the first place, but hopefully still having this target to work towards would help with complience.
I remember one lady with an absolutely enormous diabetic cat. Client herself was also both enormous and diabetic. Poor cat would not stabilise and then one morning she told me how she had to get up with him in the middle of the night because he wanted - get this - cornflakes with sugar and full cream just like she had

Re: Slentrol

In your experience do you find that weight clinic clients seem to be over weight themselves?
