Nice and toasty waking up!

The practice I work in now only has wheat bags, which I'm not that keen on either. Apart from them having the risk of hot spots on the patient, they are also quite uncomfortable for the patient to lie on, I think, as are the hard heating pad things (can't remember the name) which I especially have a hatred for!

Re: bear hugger???

Do you know who supplies the hot dogs in this country?

Re: bear hugger???

we use electric heat pads and wheaties, as previously mentioned they are great for wrapping around drip lines. we are lucky enough to have 2 heated theatre tables and I try and use a fleece blanket as well under the drapes. For smaller patients recovey in an oxygen tent can aid with keeping the patient warmer.

a lot of the time prevention is better than cure so close monitoring of the patients temp during surgery and ensuring temp is normal prior to surgery helps.

Re: bear hugger???

Shows how smart I'm NOT. Never even thought of adding something else in there, lol.

Re: bear hugger???

No personal experience but found it by Googling 'hot dog perioperative' http://www.hotdogwarming.com/index.php

Re: bear hugger???

[quote user="sazzle RVN"]

we have bair huggers but also something called a hot dog, blankets come in a variety of sizes and you can clip them snugly round the patient, they really work well.

Any more info on the Hot Dog? I don't want to just Google Hot dog, I'll just get loads of crap. Any info would be appreciated, cheers.

Re: bear hugger???

we have bair huggers but also something called a hot dog, blankets come in a variety of sizes and you can clip them snugly round the patient, they really work well.

Re: bear hugger???

Not keen on heat pads or wheat pads. these both cause hot spots and I've seen burns on patients from these.

If you have a Bair hugger no really need for added external sources of heat. think about using extremity bandages, bubble wrap, abdo bandages.

Re: bear hugger???

we just have the wheatie bags which you microwave, they're ok but they seem to get damp when they are warmed up. these are also useful to wrap around drip lines to warm up iv fluids.

Re: bear hugger???

Where I work now we use a electric heat pads and bean bags that you heat in the microwave along with bair huggers but in my last place we had hot dogs - electric heat pads with sensors on which monitor the animals temp and alter themselves accordingly - they were fab, kept the patients nice and toasty without them getting too hot

Re: bear hugger???

I would highly recommend a bair hugger - they are fantastic at minimising heat loss!

We love it, heat lost is minimal and we have also used it on critical patients eg RTAs brought in hypothermic and it is the only think that seems to effectively warm them quickly. We us the reuseable blankets from vet instrumentation and got the unit reconditioned as much cheaper. We wouldnt be without ours and would recommend them to anyone.
