I used to use them on my collie (until Zylkene came out) and they worked ok. Not as well as zylkene but well enough. Calm is a good diet but only suitable for dogs under 10kg and im guessing your dog is not! being an Alaskan Malamute. However you can get the same effect using diet manipulation if this is considered suitable for your dog by a behaviourist.

I have looked in the costings of Zylkene - way to expensive as I would need to buy a whole box of them as our practice doesn't use/recommend them (don't know why though if it gets good results)! The DAP diffuser used to work brilliantly for my old labrador but it doesn't make any difference with the malamute and to be honest he has that much hair the collar would just get lost around his neck. Also checked out the costings of Calm diet (before it was posted on here that its only for dogs upto 15kg and that would be too expensive as well.

Thanks for everyones advice, might just have to plug his ears with heavy amounts of cotton wool!!

Re: Royal Canin Calm for Dogs

Hi,

My dog also a compete nervous wreck with fireworks. I used the DAP plug in and the DAP collar plus Scullcap and Valerian tabs (dorwest herbs) and this combination really seemed to help. Also a big fan of Zylkene!

Im afraid I have not had much success with the dogs, but have been very impressed with the cat one and often recomend it to clients. Recently had a client who was due to move house so advised her to use it for a week prior to the move. She phoned me after 3 days to say her cat (who is normally mad! climbing the curtains) was off colour as it was just sitting watching her pack boxes. She had forgot that she was feeding the calm diet. She even stopped it for a few days to make sure that, that was the reason! Good enough proof for me.

Re: Royal Canin Calm for Dogs

Hi Philippa

At present we only produced a canine version of Calm for dogs up to 15kg i'm afraid. If that changes i will be sure to let you know as we have had huge numbers of reports of really good results when using the diet.

Sorry we cant help more at the moment

I am yet to find another 22yo that is scared of sparklers. Its taken years to find a music combination that covers the sounds so that I didn't have to medicate myself. I am very lucky that I have a love for heavy/thrash metal.

From the medicated perspective, the effects of sedatives can be very disconcerting. I have had valium normally in the past, this can cause halucinations, dizziness, nausea, drowsyness, the list goes on. I, knowing that I have taken medication can rationalise it as a side effect, I can't imagine how an animal would feel about similar experiences, especially as it can be safely assumed that they lack the cognitive processes needed to realise that there was psychotrophic medication hidden in that lump of cheese. Therefore I could only assume that such side effects of a canine/feline/lapine/etc equivalent to the valium I received could be rather distressing to our furry companions.

Re: Royal Canin Calm for Dogs

[quote user="Jacquelyn Smith"]My cat and ferrets are both fine with fireworks, I however am terrified of then (no partying in the new year for me).
