Hello,

I am near the end of my Nurse certificate in animal behaviour. It is pretty much the same course that the vets have for a cert in animal behaviour. It is with Sam Lindley who encourages you and teaches you to learn from her and many other sources. I have really enjoyed my course and am now doing by own behaviour consults. The link takes you directly to the website. This is a fairly new course for nurses but the vet version has been running for a while.

http://www.esvps.org/exams/n-cert-animal-behaviour.php
I was curious to know how you found this course and what it covers. Is it a recognised qualification for a nurse in the UK?

Re: Best Behaviour Course??

Hello,

Hi,

The Diploma in Companion Animal Behaviour Counselling at Southampton University gives you a broad base in a variety of disciplines essential if you want to conduct consultations. It covers, ethology, physiology, human psycology, welfare and ethics, and training to name a just few subject areas. It can be topped up to a masters degree if you wanted to as well.

It is incredibly well run by Anne McBride and incredibly hard work but worth it. It is possible to complete it when working full time with an understanding boss and a willingness to use your holiday allowance.
That course stopped running last year. They will be running masters in anthrozoology but the behaviour counselling diploma course is now finished.

Re: Best Behaviour Course??

Hi,

Just to clinics/puppy parties the BVNA certificate would be ok. But if you want to do proper consults then you need to find somethiong that will lead you to APBC membership (the other organisations such as the UKRCB are really trying to convince people that the APBC dont have the final say and they arent the only important organisatiopn in the behaviour world but really they are the biggest and most powerful so you would be better off aiming for apbc).

by 2014 the Association for the Study of animal behaviour (ASAB) and APBC want all practicing behvaiourst to vounteerily be registered and it must be necessary for them to gain Certified Clinical Animal Behaviourist (CCAB) status. This can only be done through formal degree routes.

I did the Advanced Diploma in Canine Behaviour Mangaement with Compass Training and Education (corresponsdence). I found this thorough and interesting. It took me 1.5 years. I chose this one above the COAPE diploma (which looks really good) as it gained me access to a top up BSc in Applied Animal Behaviour at Sparaholt College. This is accredited by the APBC. However, after completing the course I decided to check the degree was suitable with the ASAB and they said that I would not be able to gain CCAB status with it but encouraged me to do it still as I could just top up any missing modules to become a CCAB with Newcastle Uni. So in Spet I'm starting the Sparashot degree.

That said, this is a long haul and costing me lots of money and TIME. It is extrememly hard studying to the level whilst working full time. There also is not necessarily work at the end as behaviour is a very competeitive industry, and you have to pay for the CPD and registration fees for the organisations you have to be a member of. There is also the difficulty of gaining expereicne. In order to be a member they want you to have experience consulting adn training, but they dont want to you to consult or train without being a member! Therefore, even getting student membership is tough and to gain full membership shos massive commitment and expertise.

Re: Best Behaviour Course??

Most places offerring behaviour/welfare courses are in the process of applying for accreditation as it is such a new thing. Even if you do one of the acccreditted courses it does not qualify you as a counsellor. There are other, practical components, that you need to fulfill. To reiterate Katietaz's comment: do check out the APBC website. Also check out the following link as it is ASAB that will accredit you so best to get it from the horse's mouth!!!

My friend has recently gained her BSc in Animal Behaviour and Welfare. She previously did the COAPE Adv. Diploma. This along with her VN qualification meant she could complete the degree in less time. think it was around 18mths

Re: Best Behaviour Course??
I would only ever consider a behaviour course with connections to Sarah Heath - she is a fantastic speaker and does talks for quite a few companies
With respect that that opinion is unduly narrow in focus. SH is good/excellent but she is only one behavioural viewpoint. There are lots of equally good behaviour therapists and / or trainers out there that VNs could gain as much (more in some cases) from learning from. A VN wanting to get a really good understanding of behaviour should assimilate information from a variety of sources.

In my opinion, one of the best (if not the best) behaviour courses available at the moment is Lincoln University's Masters in companion animal behaviour counselling (it is not called that - I cannot remember what its title is) - and no Sarah Heath in sight (unless she does the odd guest lecture)!

Re: Best Behaviour Course??

BVNA do a behaviour certificate
