Can anyone tell me why please so at least i can know what im talking about before i launch into advising clients not to do this! thanks.

Re: Feeding and water bowls!

My cat drinks from the dogs bowl!!

Also agree my cats have more fun playing with the water fountain than they do drinking from it - as I say mine just havnt read the right books

Re: Feeding and water bowls!

A lot of cats don't mind food and water together, but if you have a cat with a problem like cystitis in which you are trying to do everything to make them drink more, then altering things like sperate water and food bowls to encourage drinking is important. Or a hospitalised cat, who has little choice and is probably stressed, these little things can make them happier.

My cats don't care what they drink out of or where, they use their water fountain for playing with, not drinking! Damn pets.

Re: Feeding and water bowls!

ok so I know my last comment was a bit tongue in cheek but does anybody else worry about this sort of stuff?

for example - outside of vet nursing my chosen area is psychotherapy. When I first started studying psychology we did loads of stuff on Freud - everything was Freud this or Freud that and there were lots of other 'names' out there around the same time but the one that most people remember is Freud, a pretty influential character, widely respected at the time - and now? The Id studied by the odd is one description that sits well with me. I dont doubt that he made a huge contribution but individuals dont always conform to the created stereotypes or have the same priorities ( which is demonstrated by the number of cats that dont appear to give a damn if their food bowl is joined to or close by their water bowl). So applying that to this thread yes its good that people have read this or heard that but there is always more than 1 side to the coin and sometimes it pays to read around a bit and see what else is on offer

Re: Feeding and water bowls!

[quote user="Sal the 1st"]

Maybe somebody has done a study and decided that water should be seperate to food, written about it and this is just another example of where somebody's opinion becomes 'gospel'

In the same way that we are all individuals and follow our own rules I guess there are cats out there that just havnt been reading the 'right' rule books on how they should be behaving these days

I have heard that you should never put food or water near the litter and have always played along with this rule as cats will not eat and toilet in the same area.

Re: Feeding and water bowls!

Did you mean water bowl and toilet area together?
