Patients requiring ivft for either long ga's or old, sick animals get maintainence rates on starting ivft but what would be recommended for during surgery?
i always use 5ml/kg/hr for anaesthesia losses, increase to 10ml/kg/hr for surgical procedures (without excessive blood loss),

always err on the side of caution with cats (maint = 40ml/kg/day) so i use the anaesthetic rates for them.

remember to reduce the fluid to a maintenance rate after surgery - unless indicated otherwise.

using a thermovent during anaesthesia cuts down on heat and moisture losses.

hope this helps.

yep agreed, also try monitoring BP during surgery too that will give you an indication of whether your getting enough fluids into the patient.

Re: Peri op IVFT rates

i always use 5ml/kg/hr for anaesthesia losses, increase to 10ml/kg/hr for surgical procedures (without excessive blood loss),

Our vet usually goes 5x maint during ops, then drops down to 1.5-2 x maint post op. If they urinate then maint.
I guess every vet is different tho, I feel sorry for some, watching the bags go in and imagining them waking up with the desp need to wee!!

Re: Peri op IVFT rates

Under GA I have been taught 10mls/kg/hr for dogs (approx 5 x maint), and 5mls/kg/hr WITH PUMP for cats - about 2.5 x maint
