He seems to have a slight head tilt and a nystagmus. I noticed it because he was not liking being handled, but have noticed he has been a bit quiet the last few days. He is getting around and eating

Re: Guinea pig help needed!

Awww hun so sorry to hear how things are for you with your critters It is such a difficult decision to make, but you will know when the time is right, they will tell you. From what you've said i'd be inclined to agree that a house move would be too much for your hound to cope with. It was really upsetting seeing our clients little pig, like you say he was okish until you did anything with him. I had just taken him out of his cage to give him jabs and the stress of that made him go a bit funny, I thought he was about to fit so I put him back and darkened the room, then he went into a fit Take care x

Re: Guinea pig help needed!

Hi, he is holding his own but sounds very similar to piggy you had in. He is still gettin around and eating and doesnt look too bad in his cage but when you get him out his head really tilts, think a lot f dogs are like that too though - they'e not too bad till you move them then their head really tilts and they lose balance. Had a little look at him this morning mainly torule out ear infection but they th ook clean and the whole one side of his face does seem kind of solid and lack of definition to his cheek bone - this is also the side he had his previous jaw abscess on so am wondering whether this has tracked and gone retrobular or brain wise. Have given him some baytril as its all I have here, just on the off chance, but am thinking the end may be near but will keep monitoring while getting around and eating.

I'm having a rough weekend - me and my mum have been discussing having our old dog PTS - he is 17 years old with multiple issues but is just kind of plodding along - his legs are going and he keeps hitting his chin on the floor and he is getting increasingly confused with a variable appetite. He is one of those where you just cant make the decision and we keep wishing he would make it for us but mum and dad are moving house soon and he has never lived anywhere else, he is deaf and sight isnt good so I really dont think a house move would be fair on him. I have this discussion with clients all the time about QOL etc but when its my own I struggle and turn into an irrational hysterical client.

All that I thnk is that they have both had a fab life with us but still doesnt make it any easier. :(

Re: Guinea pig help needed!

Aww sorry to hear about little Kevin How is he doing today? We had a piggie in the other day that was showing neuro signs, nystagmus and head tilt. Sadly he then fitted whilst we had him in to try treatment, we gave him diazepam and ended up pts. He had a swollen face, which vet thinks was maybe abscess which had tracked up to brain to cause neuro signs.
