I have just started the Compass Adv Dip in Canine Behaviour Management and I wondered if there was any fellow nurses studying for this qualification (or qualified behaviourists) who would like to contribute to this forum post to share information

RE: Canine Behaviour DISCUSSION forum

you may be best posting a new topic as this is a very old thread - if they are nervous i always leave a lead attched and always move slowly avoiding any eye contact. let them come to me.

RE: Canine Behaviour DISCUSSION forum

Hello, I have just read your forum and wondered if you could give me any advice on handling dogs in a clinic/hospital environment. Often dogs coming into clinics are afraid and nervous and once in their kennel are fearful of coming out which can make life very difficult as the nurse trying to handle them. Any advice appreciated.

Its encouraging to hear that others are managing to get some where.

What route are you taking to get CCAB status then? Focussing on experince? (that does seem the best way but the ASAB seem more worried about degrees). How long to you think it will take you to get there.

I have e-mailed a behaviourist that I found on the UKRCB and she has been very helpful and said I can call her tomorrow to talk things over.

In practice I've done telephone conullts and with friends and family I have done some work with their dogs but it was mainly talking them through things. I have found this is good practice for history taking though.

In total I've asked the APBC, CFBA, UKRCB, and ASAB and I will look to contact more behaviourists for work experience. I think I will end up doing the Sparsholt degree though. Its got to be better than nothing.

I've jsut googled the behaviour study group. Is it the BSAVA Companion Animal Behaviour Therapy Study Group you are referring to?

Re: Canine Behaviour DISCUSSION forum

Hi, I will never be APBC due to no degree, but am aiming to be CCAB. The APBC will be changing their entry requirements I am told so watch out for updates on their website. Lots of behaviourists will have students see practive with them. Are yo a member of the Behaviour study group? Would it be worth asking the people there ifyou can see practice?

I have been taking consults for about 3 years now whilst studying the ADV Dip, as I have done a ton of reading over several years and lots of other CPD (along with working on my own rescue/problem dogs and freinds dogs etc), this has given me a load of experience. I only stick to basic stuff and some of it is a cross over from training probs rather than behaviour, not that I don't have the knowledge to deal with tricky cases, but I don't feel its fair to the client as I am not qualified yet. I reffer to a local APBC anything out of my depth. I find she comes to the same conculsions as me and prescribes a similsr program that I would, which is a relief.

I will be taking a cut of any consults at work form cases refferd to me outside of our practice as its money the practice wouldnt otherwise have, from there I will build up a client base etc.

I will prob combine dog walking/sitting/behaviour training to make ends meet

Re: Canine Behaviour DISCUSSION forum

Hi

I've just finished the Adv diploma CBM with compass. I did enjoy the course, although towards the end I got very tired. Module 12 took me 3 months! I took this course because I wanted to go on to do the top up degree with Sparsholt College in Applied Animal Behaviour. However, I've jsut discovered that the ASAB does not accredited this course, so if your end goal is to be an APBC member then this particular dfegree will be a waste of time.

So I dont know what to do really. I've got a lot of people who are further than me in the behaviour business in terms of experience saying that it is very ahrd to get into to and you are unlikely to make a living out of it. Even the people at the top are vets or psychcologists on the side, or rely on writing articles and books etc. So I really don't kknow what to do.

Any ideas?

Re: Canine Behaviour DISCUSSION forum

Brenda Aloff has written some good books.
Turrid Ruugas has written a good book on claming signals and body language.
