Beagle pain tends to be a steroid responsive meningitis-arteritis and yours seems like a definate one. we deal with quite a few of these where i am,

pyrexia is a common symptom but not always present.

speak to your vet about the steroids, if he's unsure he can ring one of the unis to get some advice, i'm at liverpool and we are always happy to return advice phone calls

Re: Beagle pain

thanks for all the replies, have been reading about BPS all day. And I have to say until today, I hadn't heard of it.

Will definately be speaking to the vet tomorrow, about using steroids, it certainly can't make things any worse, as we were actually considering PTS today she was so bad.

Will give Kerry a hug from you thanks looby, say hi to colin for me. Just out of interest you don't know if the other beagle came from the same breeder?

Will be giving her another valium soon before bed, so if nothing else she should get a good night sleep.

Re: Beagle pain

I just googled 'beagle pain syndrome' and there is quite a lot of info on there.

Re: Beagle pain

Totally unrelated to dogs of course but I have to share as I am sure there is at least a slight resemblance -

5 years ago I had Meningitis - woke up one morning and couldnt even get out of bed, I was so sore I actually screamed out in pain when I tried to move. Phillip was only a baby at the time and I couldnt even lift him. I never felt anything like the pain I suffered then. I suffered this for 2 days then started vomiting with pyrexia, couldnt even turn my head never mind bend my neck - mum got the doctor out and an immediate referral to hospital. I had a spinal tap also and it was confirmed it was meningitis. Go easy on that wee Beagle, if it is anything like my pain, it will be horrific

Re: Beagle pain

Ah no, poor Kerry! Give her a big hug!

Colin was talking about this the other week, I never even knew it was a recognised condition. We had a young beagle in (6 months) on numerous occasions with pyrexia, lethargy, inappentance and on some occasions severe neck/ spinal pain. We actually arranaged a referral for mri scan and spinal taps to test for meningitis but the dog was too painful to transport. In the end the owners decided on a trial of prednisolone and it has worked wonders! The pup is a completely differed dog now but will probabaly have to stay on the meds long term. Interestingly we have also seen almost identical symptoms in a young boxer who is awaiting referral.

Hope she feels better soon!

Re: Beagle pain

hiya, i've got a leaflet here dropped in by a beagle owner about beagle pain syndrome/stiff beagle disease/meningo-arteritis/steroid responsive meningitis

The cause is unknown, it is known to be an immune response. the immune response results in an intense inflammation of the blood vessels supplying the meninges and cervical spinal cord

Symptoms: stiff gait, reluctance to eat and drink, lethary and pyrexia (although i know you say yours hasn't got this)

Diagnosis: based on symptoms and spinal tap

Treatment: prednisolone at an immuno-suppressive dose. A new treatment is cytarabine and results in a quicker response and less relapses than steroid treatment.

Blood samples from affected dogs are being collected and stored at the AHT so future testing can be done once funding is secured

Does sound like it could be this as others have suggested? steroids would be a cheap trial to see if she does improve on them....hope you get her sorted soon

Re: Beagle pain

Thanks for the replies, will definately discuss this with the vet.
