One of the vets at my practice seems keen for us nurses to do more and he wanted me to put the skin sutures in after he amputated

Re: lump removals/suturing

I'm in with the camp that prefers duties of this nature to be carried out by the veterinary surgeon. I would like to have more practice at stitching up - but lump removals etc I would prefer not to do and as mentioned somewhere above me, tail tip amputations, digit amputations etc I would not feel at all comfortable doing (even if I was trained to do them which I am not) - this is most definately 'proper' surgery and as such in my opinion falls under the remit of the veterinary surgeon, at least as far as private practice goes.

I GOT TO DO IT loads of years ago, but never since (post mortom on a dog and the vet waz too lazy to do it) I've wanted to do it since but the reps came and wasn't happy to show "us nurses" how to do it, but 1 vet, he should her. kinda pissed me right off, sorry for the language, but I WANT to know this, and loved stiching the PM, I'm a quailifeind nurse and want to use my my skills...

Re: lump removals/suturing

would tend to agree with you - this wasnt what I came into the job to do.

Re: lump removals/suturing

I have no interest in doing this kind of stuff and seeing as most of us aren't taught any of this in our training I think in private practice it's a bit dodgy.

Re: lump removals/suturing

I think that most clients in private practice would prefer a veterinary surgeon rather than a veterinary nurse to be carrying out the surgery on their pets.

Re: lump removals/suturing

Hi There

all ours nurses do minor lump removals, debride and suture wounds, tail tip, ear tip and digit amputations as well as aural haematoma's. We don't generally do wound closures for the vets mainly because we don't have the time we are a V busy charity practice and our ops waiting list would be months long if the nurses didn't do all the surgery that we do.

Re: lump removals/suturing

From what I have seen, not many nurses do or are given the chance to. Personally, I often get a nurse to stitch up after longer ops cos im tired! I think it depends on the practice though.

Re: lump removals/suturing

we don't do suturing, lump removals, simple stich ups or anything like that. To be honest I used to get fed up of my vet offering me a suturing job like it was some sort of treat - it wasnt because I still wasnt getting my other jobs done while I was doing his. And what was he doing while I was doing his sutures? - he was upstairs watching the footie or the like
