All vets and nurses will do it differently and use different materials and patterns etc, so each case must be judged independently and decision made form there.

Thus you must have a good working knowledge of the needle types, shapes, cross sections, natural and synthetic materials, mono and multifilament materials etc etc to make the correct, informed decision. So many suture manufacturers have guidance documents and advice you could ask for detailing properties and uses of all prodcuts.

Re: Sutures

Normally use 2 or 3 metric monofilament or sheathed nylon in the skin and if subcut needed then yea either vicryl (prob 1.5-2metric) or chromic cat gut 3 metric.

Re: Sutures

depends on many many things that one I'm afraid, including:

-vetsurgeon's likes/dislikes (main one!)

-what tissue types/layers need suturing

-whether infection/contamination is present

-temperament of animal ie/whether suture removal is possible

However, to give an idea of possibles:

muscle / sub cut - vicryl (polyglactin 910)

skin - monofilament nylon
