I am looking for some information and wondered if anybody here could help me. Is there anybody on this forum who uses or has staff within their practice who uses clipnosis / pegs on the cats neck/pinch-induced behavioural inhibition to aid management

Re: Clipnosis / pegs on cats - any one using this?

Hi Phrin, I understand what you are saying ..and yes I do scruff but only when I absolutely have to ..I usually try to hold cats minimally and when not possible then I try to use finger and thumb to massage above the peri-orbital area when holding near the head to try to calm the cat, next level up would be using a towel or cat bag..although generally find a towel less distressing to get a cat wrapped in just due to the time a bag can take, and again massaging around head..and absolutely worst case scenario then I scruff. I understand what you are saying and it's a valid point..in which case this technique may be preferable to scruffing ..my concern is that too many people scruff from the outset and so may just use this as a replacement rather than a technique to be used when absolutely needed I would say that the majoirty of VN's in my ( large) practice scruff more than they don't ..and it's usually not needed

Re: Clipnosis / pegs on cats - any one using this?
Do you scruff? Not trying to be obtuse honest! Just interested as i have found cats respond much better to pinching or clipnosis rather than scruffing.

Of course I'd rather not use either approach, but we all get the ones with whom the gently gently approach doesn't work

ETA - I'm showing my ignorance here, but I have no idea what Sarah Heath recommends for the problem cats? Again just interested... :)

I tried the 'pinchong' the scruff today.
She seemed really calm and much less vocal/stressing. as soon as i let go she wanted fuss and love again so i dont think it fazed her just encouraged her to lie still

When I have used it, one or two clothes pegs are placed on the scruff of the cat - most cats go a bit quieter, some go really flat and you are able to do almost anything, and some don't react at all. If they don't react then I put them back in the kennel, let them chill, get them out, do nothing but tlc, put them back, then get them out again and do the most minimal restraint possible - you almost have to make the cat think that it was their idea to sit still for a b/s, or endure sandbags for a rad! Often making tutututshhh type of noises helps, along with blowing gently on their nose, and sometimes getting eye contact and slooow blinking!

One vet taught me a good trick - that 'pinching' with thumb & forefinger, a cats scruff, rather than scruffing with your whole hand iyswim, has pretty much the same effect as 'clipnosis'

A bit scary as you have little control if they do freak out, but it has worked for me in the past, especially with cats that are just damn well fed up of being pinned to the table!

Less is deffo more with cats ;)

Re: Clipnosis / pegs on cats - any one using this?

iv never used this technique before and would be willing to give it a go but would be worried that certain cats you try it on gets very annoyed and thenyou struggle to handle afterwards?

Thanks for the replies so far guys. Much appreciated. Has anybody seen a case where clipnosis has had an adverse effect on the cat? What signs did you see that made you feel it was aversive? Behavioural? Physiological? Have you ever seen a case where the animal's health was compromised by clipnosis? e.g. dyspnoea worsened, etc
Bump!

Also,

Those of you who have used this technique....

1. How long on average does it last for (minutes)?

2. Do they become reactive again before the clips are removed OR do they reliably stay 'clipnosed' until the clips are removed?

I haven't used clipnosis myself, but I have tried scruffing on an unhandlable cat which worked wonders. However after this I can tell you the main difference - intense cramp in your hand at the crucial moment doesn't help!!
