Advice needed! Has anyone on here had any sucess with any joint supplements for HD either with their own pets or any clients? My little Dylan is only 5 months (and...as I have posted before I think I am a neurotic dog owner!!! I am currently trialling the nutravet product Nutraquin + it has anti-inflammatory properties from a natural source, he has been on it for two weeks now and has not suffered any lameness during this time. Early days but so far so good. :-)

Re: Hip Dysplasia in Labs

Hill JD is the one how ever it's not something you can use on a growing puppy minimum age is 1 years old. I believe the RCW mobility is the same I would probably use your large breed dog hills or RCW food if he's going to be over 25kg. It's designed to slow down the growth of bone so they grow fat and strong and not long and weak. Use supplements like the synoquin growth. At year or so old have him x-rayed to see if he has it.

If he does then expect to use supplements or the jd for life and be prepared for putting him on NSAIDS later in life. I've currently had my cat on NSAIDS for 4 months now. I hate the fact that he's on these but from the irritated, painful, arthritic cat he's happier and more mobile. I know his life will probably be shortened by the NSAIDS but I cannot let him live a painful life. Quality not quantity is what's best.

Try not to worry until you find out he may just be growing and being all gangly like a teenager.

Re: Hip Dysplasia in Labs

Hi, in my experience Hills JD is a good diet although reports of a few extra poo's to normal have been reported, a few of the nurses i work with have and do use it and rave. Also comes in a reduced calorie version for weight control.

Also have you thought about Hydrotherapy? We have a treadmill and have had many dogs in with all kinds of problems including hip dysplasia with great results and medications have been able to be reduced if not stopped.

We also like using synoquin, have had reps from other companies but synoquin seems to be the suppliment of choice for us.

Hope this is helpfull to you.

Re: Hip Dysplasia in Labs

Have you looked at snoquin growth?

Re: Hip Dysplasia in Labs

I have a really huge GSD. He is long, has an extra vertebra in his spine (have you ever!), really long dangly legs and has ED. This is my other male GSD, not the one that bloated this week. Both are males and are joined at the hip even though they both deny it.

Anyhow, long dangly legged one also has arthritis in his spine and i put him onto the Royal Canin Mobility just to see. I am not one for dry dog food at all, and trying to sell the stuff to me is impossible but he was so bad that i thought it cannot hurt to try.

What a difference it has made, so much so, that if i run out of dog food and feed him something else, he goes lame. Not sure it will work for HD, but perhaps its worth a try?

My other GSD (the one that bloated this week) does not respond to the RC Mobility. He has a really bad elbow and went lame on it about 3 months ago. So lame he was unable to move. I put him onto GCS-Max and he is now sound as a bell. But the Mobility does not work for him, and the GSC-Max does not work for dangly legs. So i guess play around and see what works for your dawg.

Re: Hip Dysplasia in Labs

My old Lab was on Synoquin from the age of 2 when he was diagnosed with HD (and as my vet said at the time had the worst hips he had seen in a long time...) through to 11 when he needed to go on permanent NSAIDs. Considering how awful the hips looked, he did remarkably well to remain purely on supplements and for him they did work well.

RCW Mobility diet can be fed to puppies over 6 months and I've seen some good results with this, though my personal preference does lie with Synoquin - expensive but works in the vast majority of cases. I've not used Fidovet but I believe this is also a green lipped mussel? and possibly similar to RCW Mobility tabs/diet.

Hope all goes well for your little Lab
