I'm just looking for some answers in a rather awful situation. Not trying to undermine the vets involved, just looking for some ideas or ways to help settle our minds.

Just read your post and we have had two similar sounding cases within a couple of weeks of each other just before christmas. Just wondering what part of the UK you are in (assuming up north like us when you mentioned Liverpool). If you could pm me that would be great as sounds very similar in presentation to what we had here.

Thanks

Re: Awful situation, any help appreciated...

Aww hun I am so sorry to hear about your loss, my dog is my world so can't imagine what your going through.
did they re-check the bloods that day?,was he urinating ok? maybe his kidneys gave up. i would consider PM too.

agree with the above poster ?DIC

Re: Awful situation, any help appreciated...

Awww hun Huge HUGS!!!!!!

my mind is going along potential lepto route maybe, as that can affect both liver and kidneys and they can deteriorate quite quikly from that.

Cant think of anything else unless he had gone into DIC for some reason.

What an awful thing to happen. Poor dog :(

I don't really have any medical coments to make other than to say that I had a collie X when I was a child. She was about 8 years too. She seemed perfectly healthy. I fed her fat scraps from a pig roast I went to as a treat and the next day she collapsed. She was dead within about 24 hours. This was thirty years ago and no bloods were done as far as I can remember but the PM showed multiple organ failure - she had been compensating okay but the addition of loads of fat to her diet just precipitated her over the edge. I don't recall my mum or I being aware of her being sick at all before being fed pig fat. So I guess that it is entirely possible that your parent's dog had something grumbling along but that, for whatever reason, it just reached a point at which it couldn't anymore.

So sorry though. What an awful shock for you all.

I have to say (and not sure I could do this with my own pet mind) that, working in a zoo, we perform a PM on every animal that passes away, even those whose cause of death seems entirely straightforward, and it is very very interesting to see the number who have other issues going on, or even the odd case of sudden death with an animal who appeared completely healthy the day before, but turns out to be riddled with problems. Different scenario I know, but I guess we're only ever going to be speculating otherwise (but that's not to say we always get answers on PM either!)

Hopefully one of our internal medic friends can offer some ideas, take care

If you have details of the blood results and other tests done, why dont you have a chat with one of your vet colleagues at work? Maybe give you a few ideas as to what may have happened?
