Thank you for all the replies. I couldn't remember the exact ins and outs of whether is was discontinued or whether it was a stock issue. Will pass the information on the vets at work

caninsulin is not made by the same company, insuvet is/was pfizer and caninsulin is intervet/schering-plough

Again It hasn't been discontinued there is just a major supply issue with the bovine pancreatic extract which has lead to human supply stockpiling and none available to the vet world. It is possible in time that insuvet will be back on the market but for now it is not available, see below for the recommendations from intervet/schering-plough on changing a patient over onto caninsulin

Converting patients from another insulin on to Caninsulin

Here are some guidelines on converting patients to Caninsulin from another insulin. In an unstable diabetic on very high doses of insulin it may be better to go back to first principles. In any other circumstances however the following advice seems appropriate:

It is difficult to have general guidelines regarding conversion from one type of insulin to another but in most cases it is not necessary to go back to an initial stabilization protocol and we recommend the following 4 steps:

1) Reduce the dose by 10-20% compared to the previous insulin.

2) Ask the owner to monitor the animal closely for signs of hypoglycaemia during the first 12-24 hours after the first injection has been given

3) Give the reduced dose for a period of 5-7 days and ask the owner to monitor if clinical signs of diabetes mellitus are observed during those 5-7 days. It would be particularly useful if water-intake could be monitored.

4) Re-asses the animal after these 5-7 days, ideally a blood glucose curve is made.

All of the Insuvet range have been discontinued. I think the rep can give you information pack to change to caninsulin. Caninsulin is also by same company but only animal licensed insulin now.

We've been told the insuvet insulins are no longer going to be produced, so our lente patients are going to have to change to cannisulin soon.

As far as I know its not actually been discontinued but there have been problems with the bovine insulin so all stocks are diverted to the human market, we were told about this a while ago and think it is still the case, i think pfizer were actually recommending switiching onto an alternative (caninsulin) and if you contact intervet-schering-plough they will recommend the correct way of changing a patient over

I know that Centaur stock bovine hypurin zinc and it's like a tenner dearer, I'm assuming it's exactly the same?

As i am aware it has been discontinued. We are having to change our patients to other insulin products - having to re-start glucose curves, fructo's etc.

Contact your intervet rep... as far as I know the Insuvet range is discontinued because of the merging of companies etc .... our diabetic patients are all on Insuvet Lente but at some point they will have to change to Caninsulin... they sent out info on the changes a couple of weeks ago

i thought it had been discounted, im sure the rep came in and said just caninsulin was avaiable now after the buy out. Hope im wrong for you.

i don't think its been discontinued, but it has been out of stock for a while. We were given lots of notice and stocked up a bit, but i hope its not discontinued as we have a couple of cats on it!
