Has anyone ever seen this? I'm convinced it isn't just old age.

Thanks

We decided to have a post mortem by the vet - he is very well educated in the field of exotics.

Dental issues - microscopic at most - small pin tip (not pin head) ulcer inside the cheek - not enough to cause the level of anorexia/slobbering present. Blood fine - no sign of diabetes.

Kidneys on the other hand were microscopic - about the size of a small garden pea! they were deformed in shape, small and very dark in colour - we consulted post mortem pictures of "healthy" chinchillas for a comparison.

So, sadly she we think that she had kidney failure/disease?? Not much in books about this unfortunately

Re: Chinchilla Kidney Failure?

Hi, I have seen chinnies need dental work much more often than that so doesnt sound like her teeth are too severe. Is the vetergesic sedating her making her not want to eat?? Also has she any gingivitis as some have that without dental issues giving them a very sore mouth. If you are unsure would try to get her to chin vet as often dental issues may be subtle to the untrained eye, and they then would be able to take bloods etc.

Re: Chinchilla Kidney Failure?

She has just her 2nd dental in 2 1/2 years, she has always drank excessively. I haven't done any bloods as yet and her urine is so orangey that urine testing hasn't been attempted!

It has only been mentioned by the vet, so I just wondered whether anyone had seen this in a chinny? I am also aware of reports of diabetes too.

She hasnt eaten volutarily for quite a few days now, but her teeth are now fine. she is on vetergesic for the dental tx

Re: Chinchilla Kidney Failure?

How has it actually been confirmed - bloods, urine etc? I have known rabbits and guineas drink excessiveley due to dental pain. Are the dental issues under control?? Has it been on any meds for dental pain eg NSAIDs??
